  5. Mesa Musings: Sports Illustrated leads to best summer — in school

There's a price to be paid for sitting in the back of a high school algebra classroom and devouring issues of Sports Illustrated strategically hidden behind your textbook. That price is called summer school. And I paid it in 1960. Because I read SI...

  11. Mesa Musings: Losing Californians faster than we can grow them

It's as passé as an old Mission Pak wrapper. I'm speaking of the late, great state of California. I'm a California native — I love the place — but the old gal isn't what she used to be. Mission Pak was a product of my youth, marketed by a...

  15. On Faith: A day of spiritual practice can do wonders

A day of rest. A day of mindfulness, of slowing down to appreciate life. A "Sabbath." Regardless of religious background, a day devoted to spirituality — to "be" instead of to "do" — calls for motivation, creativity and planning. Cell...

  19. Charles H. Juergens

Charles H. Juergens of Costa Mesa, Ca passed on February 18, 2011 at home with his family by his side. Charlie would not want your ordinary obituary so I (Karen) his wife of 34 years have decided to honor him in my own way. Charles was fond of a small town in the Midwest called Dunlap, Iowa. As a small child he would stay all summer to spend time with his grandmother Gussie whom he adored and would share many a story of his love for Dunlap and the small town mentality. Charlie also enjoyed water skiing in the “Juergens” compound in Lake George, NY during the summer months and recently discovered their old house was turned in to a hotel and the power boat is still on the property.
