1. The Crowd: An olive leaf for the New Year

In the Eastern Hemisphere, the Lunar New Year, also known as the Chinese New Year, Spring Festival, is the most important holiday occasion on the annual calendar. In Orange County, the Lunar New Year celebration, which begins Feb. 10, is being observed throughout the region with considerable excitement and hope for a healthy and prosperous 2013. For those unaware, the holiday is an occasion when red envelopes signifying good luck are often filled with money and presented to loved ones and friends in a symbolic gesture of good faith. Lunar New Year has also become an important occasion for our retail friends in the community, inasmuch as gift-giving is a significant aspect of marking the occasion.

  3. Reel Critics: Oliver Stone's 'Savages' twists and thrills

I was going to review of Woody Allen's "To Rome with Love," but why waste your time? Except for the scenery, it's a major disappointment. Oliver Stone's pulpy, ferocious thriller"Savages" makes greed good and exciting.

  5. Steinberg: My Super Bowl memories

Super Bowl week is a convention of Americana. It has transcended the narrow genre of football to become a gathering place for corporate, media, entertainment and political figures who will descend on Indianapolis this week. The general rule is that if...

  7. Reel Critics: 'Wall Street' sequel not hard-hitting enough for Stone

In "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps," director Oliver Stone revisits the bad boys of high finance in this sequel to his acclaimed "Wall Street" (1987). Michael Douglas reprises his Oscar-winning performance as the slimy Gordon Gekko. Newly released from federal prison, he publishes a book challenging the "Greed Is Good" credo of his previous life.

  9. Classically Trained: After 186 years, Ninth still magical

The greatest melody in all of Western music starts quietly. From its subdued beginnings, tapestries of instrumental color are added in each melodic line. The musical layers glide along on top of one another, repeating the same tune in fascinating new...

  11. Movie secrets are there, in the script!

You know what "Star Wars" is about? I mean, really about? Vietnam. It's a critical allegory of the war: The Rebels are the scrappy Viet Cong, hastily assembled, devoted and relentless; the Empire is the American military, tripped up by an enemy using guerrilla tactics and inferior weaponry. Oh, there's more here, but...

  13. Dennis Hopper's carnival ride through life

"I was a beatnik, and then I was a hippie, and before that I was a bohemian," a sky-high Dennis Hopper confided to Merv Griffin on television one night in 1971, in a clip you can see on YouTube. On the opposite couch, Willie Mays uncomfortably refilled his glass of water and James Brolin sneered — Hopper certainly didn't belong to their worlds.

  15. Iran vs. 'Argo': What other lawsuits could be in the wings?

  17. 'House of Cards' Hammy, Addictive

It may be impossible to write a drama about politics that doesn’t come off as ham-handed, over-the-top, and laughable. This is probably because actual politics reverberate with mundane news-cycle non-events, punctuated by overseas disasters and domestic high school snippiness and gossip-mongering. Politics is too stultifying to actually dramatize for film or television.

  19. Pacino's 'Any Given Sunday' speech gets new life in Jeep ad

Many actors are finding easy money in doing voice-over work for radio and television commercials. But it is very unlikely that anyone landed an easier gig than Al Pacino, who didn't lift a finger to get a plum voice-over spot with Chrysler Jeep. The...

  21. Critic's Notebook: Movie violence must not be stopped

I abhor violence. As a rookie police reporter years ago I saw the damage guns, knives, broken bottles, metal pipes, hands — humans — can inflict. From the terrifyingly premeditated to the unfortunately accidental, those images still have the power to shake me to the core. They will never leave me.

  23. In hip-hop, violence is taking on a diminishing role

Among the most important rap albums released over the last year or so, one contains a song about Nas' complicated relationship with his teenage daughter. Another has a track in which Killer Mike outlines President Reagan's contribution to the prison-industrial complex. A third disc finds Drake pondering the impossibility of real-life romantic connection in the age of the nip-slip Twitpic.
