1. Reel Critics: Been there, killed that 'Giant'

Director Bryan Singer made his mark in Hollywood in 1995 with the offbeat crime drama "The Usual Suspects." That success earned him the director's chair for big-time action flicks like "X-Men" and "Superman Returns." He now enters the world of ancient fantasy adventure with "Jack the Giant Slayer."

3. Reel Critics: 'Zero' scores a perfect 10

Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow ("The Hurt Locker") has masterfully directed action and actors in "Zero Dark Thirty," a slow-burning re-creation of the hunt for Osama bin Laden.

5. Reel Critics: Dump this raunchy 'Jump Street'

Rude, crude and rowdy, "21 Jump Street"purports to be a major Hollywood movie. But it sure looks like the kind of trash TV that Jerry Springer used to promote.

7. Reel Critics: 'Lantern' needs more than just special effects

The latest superhero film is "Green Lantern." Played by Ryan Reynolds, the hero draws his powers from a glowing green ring. Ancient guardians of the universe choose him to replace his dying predecessor. He becomes much more of a space cowboy on intergalactic adventures than an Earth-bound crime-fighter.

NEW YORK — A man in a Manhattan rehearsal room asks a young boy a question: "No soccer game this week?" A look crosses the kid's face. You can read love, loneliness, contempt. "It's not soccer season anymore, Dad."

19. Review: Nothing magic about 'Jack the Giant Slayer'

Pity poor Jack. There he was, minding his own business in some dusty fairy tale book when the powers that be dragooned him into active service as the front man for the would-be blockbuster "Jack the Giant Slayer." Of course, Jack's been through the...

21. Roots of some giant problems in 'Jack the Giant Slayer' ★★

Most modern fantasy adventures are distinguished, if that's the right word, by shot after shot of actors gaping at amazements — beanstalks busting out of the ground, for example, or flaming trees being flung as weapons at the king's castle — along with actors running away yelling "Look out!" or "Aaaggghhhhh!!!" while being pursued, say, by a digitally animated giant with two heads. The movies have been into such trickery across the medium's entire life span, back to Georges Melies. It's simply a matter of the method.

23. 'Jack the Giant Slayer' review: I miss Buffy

* (out of four)
* (out of four) Anna Faris stars in “Little Bo Peep: Wolf Exploder.” That sounds like a classic tale revision that would pick the right tone and actually deliver some fun. Until that movie actually exists, we’re left with “Jack...
