Locals are well traveled

The two-week holiday break has sent local prep basketball teams across the Southland and country for tournament games. Teams have hit destinations such as Florida, Arizona, Nevada and Palm Desert.

Locally, two girls’ basketball tournaments are in their final stages. Edison is hosting the Orange County Championships and Marina is hosting the Larry Doyle Basketball Classic. Both events conclude Thursday with consolation and championship action.

Girls’ Basketball

Brethren Christian: The Warriors stormed to a 26-0 first-quarter lead on Desert Chapel on Tuesday at the MaxPreps Holiday Classic (Small Schools Division) and went on to a 54-22 victory, with every Warrior hitting the scoring column. BC’s balanced attack was led by 10 points each from senior center Kate Jensen and junior guard Sara Hodges.

The Warriors face Desert Mirage at the tournament Thursday.

Edison: The Chargers began play at the Orange County Championships tournament Monday and came away with a 79-19 pasting of Oxnard. On Tuesday, Edison routed St. Anthony of Long Beach, 78-52, in the quarterfinals. In the win over St. Anthony, freshman center Katie Lou Samuelson dropped in a game-high 29 points, junior point guard Karlie Samuelson scored 22 and senior forward Rilee Horton scored 12.

Last week, Edison finished up play at the Arizona Nike Tournament of Champions. In their final game, the Chargers downed Villa Marina Academy of Pennsylvania, 61-50. Katie Lou Samuelson scored 27 points to lead the way. Junior guard Geena Gomez scored 17 points, senior forward Monay Lee added 11 points and Horton had six points.

The Orange County Championships, a 16-team event, concludes Thursday. Games begin at 9 a.m. and the championship final is at 8 p.m..

Fountain Valley: The Barons began the Costa Mesa Tournament on Tuesday and edged Heritage of Sun City in overtime, 52-51. Senior forward Carly Ducat scored 15 points and sophomore forward Lora Bender and junior guard Jasmine Matar had 10 and nine points, respectively.

Fountain Valley fell behind early to undefeated El Toro (12-0) in nonleague action Dec. 22 and couldn’t bounce back and fell to the Chargers, 62-38. Sophomore guard/forward Emily Krause had 10 points for the Barons.

Fountain Valley, which won eight games a year ago, is 7-4.

Huntington Beach: The Oilers overpowered Tustin on the opening day of the Costa Mesa Tournament on Tuesday, scoring a 71-18 win. Three Oilers hit double-figures, led by senior guard Maya Kennedy’s 21 points. Senior point guard Kelsey Minato scored 13 points and sophomore guard Paola Roa scored 12.

Last week, Huntington completed play at the Arizona Nike Tournament of Champions and scored a 66-52 victory over St. Bernard on Dec. 22. Minato’s 24 points led all scorers

Marina: On the second day of the Larry Doyle Basketball Classic on Tuesday, the Vikings were defeated, 63-56, by Laguna Hills. Junior guard Lauren Dorame led Marina with 17 points and sophomore guard Madison Yutkins scored 12.

Marina went 2-2 last week at the Basic Tournament in Henderson, Nev. They started tourney play with a 54-46 victory over Cheyenne of Nevada. Dorame’s performance included 16 points, five rebounds and four steals. Sophomore guard Melissa Lindquist had a strong game with 12 points and three assists and Yutkins had 10 points.

Marina also defeated Bonanza of Nevada, 37-31. Dorame again led the scoring with 13 points and came up with eight steals. The Vikings lost their final two games of the tournament, first falling, 53-46, to Las Vegas and, 64-49, to Boulder City of Nevada. Lindquist scored 14 points to lead the Vikings.

The Larry Doyle Classic runs through Thursday. Games start at 10:30 a.m. and the tournament final is at 4:30 p.m.

Ocean View: The Seahawks are playing this week at the Serrano Tournament. On Tuesday, they were handed a 46-38 by Oak Hills of Hesperia. Junior forward Alexxas Laun scored 10 points to lead Ocean View.

Boys’ Basketball

Edison: The Chargers jumped out to a 36-18 halftime lead on Los Osos on Tuesday at the Desert Heat Tournament and went on to rout the Grizzlies, 54-32. Senior guard Dreon Barlett scored a game-best 29 points and senior guard Corey Foster added 17 more in the win.

At the Orange County North/South Challenge last week at El Toro High, Edison took care of Beckman, 62-48, on Dec. 22. Barlett led all scorers with 30 points. Senior guard Corey Foster scored 19 points and freshman guard Derek Molina scored 10 points.

Fountain Valley: The Barons bolted to a big early lead on San Juan Hills on Dec. 22 and went on to pound the Mustangs, 69-37, at the Orange County North/South Challenge at El Toro High. Junior guard Josh Armstrong posted a game-high 16 points for the Barons, who raced to a 30-14 halftime lead. Junior forwards Tanner Trounce and Sean Finley both had 11 points, senior guard Zack Richartz scored 10 and senior forward Nathan Moss had seven points and seven rebounds.

“Our depth and strength were evident in this game,” said Barons Coach Roger Holmes, whose team improved to 9-2. “Our offense continued to be consistent and our defense was solid throughout the game.”

Fountain Valley is in Orlando, Fla., this week for the KSA Holiday Classic at the Walt Disney Wide World of Sports Complex. The tournament started Wednesday and runs through Friday.

Huntington Beach: The Oilers began play Monday at the Orange Holiday Classic against Arroyo Grande. Huntington fell behind, 31-14, at the half and went on to fall, 52-36, to the Eagles. Senior guard Blake Skorich and junior forward Harley Ruder both had 12 points for the Oilers.

Huntington bounced back Tuesday to rally past Westminster, 43-37, at Chapman.

Marina: The Vikings started the Estancia Coast Classic on Tuesday against Laguna Beach and fell to the Breakers, 57-50, in pool play. Marina trailed throughout the game, despite getting a game-high 23 points from senior guard Jordon Adnams. Senior guard JJ James scored 11 points and junior forward Casey Hayes had eight points.

At the Orange County North/South Challenge last week, Marina took on host El Toro and dropped a 53-43 game. James and Adnams scored 17 and 12 points, respectively for the Vikings, who were outscored, 38-21, in the second half after leading, 22-15, at halftime.

Ocean View: The Seahawks are playing this week in Santa Barbara at the Tournament of Champions. On Monday, they pulled away in the second half to pick up a 59-41 victory over Leuzinger. Senior Cristian Rivera and junior Josh Mishler led all scorers with 16 points apiece. Rivera also had seven rebounds, three assists and three steals.

The Seahawks earned their second tournament victory Tuesday by pulling away in the fourth quarter to defeat San Marcos, 56-39. Rivera scored 19 points and freshman guard Tyler Burch had 12 points.
