High School Roundup: Newport Harbor boys’ soccer wins twice

OCEANSIDE — Newport Harbor High won a pair of pool-play games Saturday at Oceanside Soccer Complex, defeating Calexico, 1-0, and Chaparral, 2-1.

Brandon Varela and Alan Alcantara scored for the Sailors (6-2-2) against Calexico. Alcantara’s goal was assisted by Hugo Enriquez.

Victor Negrete made three saves.

Bryant Reyes scored unassisted against Chaparral, with Alcantara scoring again on David Bernal’s assist.

Negrete had three saves, and Devin Patterson had two.

Newport Harbor plays La Costa Canyon on Monday at 11:30 a.m. to wrap up pool play.

CHINO HILLS — Natalia Bruening had 13 points and 12 rebounds for the Sea Kings in their Best in the West Tournament opener Saturday at Ayala High.

Brianna Westrup had 13 points and six steals for CdM (7-3), for which Krista Anderson had 12 points and 10 rebounds.
