High School Roundup: Eagles advance to Santiago tourney title game

Estancia 66, Santa Ana Valley 34

GARDEN GROVE — Junior Slade Garnett had 18 points and five steals to help the Eagles advance to Saturday’s championship game at the Santiago tournament.

Sophomore Maya Van Den Heever added eight points, seven assists and four steals for Estancia (11-2).

The Eagles play in the title game at 7:30 p.m.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Corona del Mar 76, Cooper 65

LA JOLLA — Senior guard Robby Bracho made five three-pointers and finished with 21 points in the Sea Kings’ consolation game against a school from The Woodlands, Texas, in the Torrey Pines Holiday Classic at La Jolla Country Day School on Friday.

Sam Kobrine hit four threes to finish with 12 points and Kevin Manchester had 15 points.

The Sea Kings (8-3) play Laguna Beach in a consolation game on Saturday at 12:40 a.m.

Sage Hill 48, Kealakehe 43

KONA, Hawaii — Junior forward Tyler Hague scored 14 points for the Lightning in their pool-play opener at the World Youth Basketball Tournament on Friday.

Senior center Cameron Hall added 10 points for Sage Hill (6-3). Mario Nark was a spark off the bench, contributing three three-pointers.

Sage Hill continues pool play on Saturday against Honokaa.

Archbishop O’Leary 53, Estancia 44

Senior Josh Mendoza had 17 points for the Eagles against the team from Alberta, Cananda in a consolation game of the Tustin-Estancia Coast Classic on Friday at Estancia.

Martin Harry and Kaena McReynolds each had 11 points for Estancia (5-7), which plays host to Sunny Hills on Saturday at 7:45 p.m. in another consolation game.

Ponderosa 53, Newport Harbor 43

CATHEDRAL CITY — Newport Harbor High senior Nic Sargeant scored 15 points in the second round of pool play against a team from Shingle Springs, Calif., near Placerville, on Friday at the Max Preps Palm Springs tournament at Cathedral City High.

The Sailors (7-6) conclude pool play Saturday at Palm Springs High at 6:30 p.m.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Southern California Classic

OCEANSIDE — Newport Harbor High won its group by defeating Mission Hills, 4-1, and tying Arcadia, 2-2, on Saturday at El Camino High.

Junior Alan Alcantara had two goals in the win and both goals in the tie for the Sailors (1-2-3), who Otai Ranch in the quarterfinals on Saturday at Fallbrook High at noon.

If victorious, the Tars would play in the semifinals at 7:45 p.m. Saturday. The final would be Monday.

Jose Garfias had a goal and an assist in the win, in which David Mondragon added two assists and Manolo Laguna had a goal.

Juan Vargas made seven saves in the two games combined.
