DESERT HOT SPRINGS — Senior shooting guard Kyle Hefner finished with 19 points and four three-pointers in the Mustangs’ opener in the Fairfield Division of the MaxPreps Holiday Classic at Desert Hot Springs High on Thursday.

Sean Comer had 11 points and seven assists for Costa Mesa (8-4).

Quinton Bell finished with nine points, 13 rebounds, four blocks and three steals, while Mason Tufuga added 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The Mustangs resume pool-play action against Lake Elsinore Temescal Canyon on Friday at 11 a.m.

El Camino 78, Newport Harbor 51

DESERT HOT SPRINGS — Nic Sargeant scored 23 points for the Sailors in Thursday’s tournament opener at Desert Hot Springs High.

Newport Harbor (7-5) resumes pool-play action at 2:30 p.m. Friday, against Ponderosa.

LA JOLLA — Senior forward Kevin Manchester had 17 points for the Sea Kings in their first game in the Torrey Pines Holiday Classic at La Jolla Country Day High on Thursday.

Bo St. Geme had 11 points for CdM (7-3), ranked No. 3 in the CIF Southern Section Division 3AA preseason poll.

The Sea Kings led Sonora, No. 6 in Division 2A, by eight at halftime.

CdM’s Sam Kobrine added 10 points.

The Sea Kings resume tournament play against Cooper of The Woodlands, Texas, on Friday at 11 a.m.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Corona del Mar 2, Mission Viejo 1

MISSION VIEJO — John O’Connor and Mason Garell each produced second-half goals to lead the Sea Kings’ rally in the South Orange County Classic at Mission Viejo High on Thursday.

Ryan Cargile, Alec Taketa and Cameron Davis each played well on defense for CdM (5-2-2).

The Sea Kings continue pool-play action on Friday, with a 9:45 a.m. match at El Toro, followed up by a 3 p.m. match against El Centro at Mission Viejo High.
