High School Roundup: Estancia boys win soccer tournament

PLACENTIA — Senior Ricky Gutierrez had a goal and an assist to lead the Eagles in the championship game of the North Orange County Classic on Tuesday at Valencia High.

Senior Christian Monroy’s unassisted goal in the 25th minute opened the scoring for the Eagles (8-1-1), who are on an eight-match unbeaten streak.

Gutierrez converted an assist from junior Cameron Pizzaro for the second goal and junior Chris Moya finalized the scoring on Gutierrez’s assist.

Sophomore Jesus Rodriguez, called up from the junior varsity for the tournament, made three saves to record the shutout.

In Monday’s semifinals, Estancia topped Northwood, 1-0.

Moya scored in the 30th minute and Rodriguez made three saves.

Estancia returns to action on Jan. 7 against Sunny Hills.

Newport Harbor 0, Valencia 0

PLACENTIA — The North Orange County Classic semifinal match ended in a deadlock, but Valencia advanced due to a 5-3 advantage in penalty kicks.

The Sailors (4-2-2) were eliminated from the tournament, which did not have a third-place match.

Newport Harbor returns to action on Saturday in the Southern California Classic in Oceanside.

LAKE FOREST - Junior guard Sam Kobrine finished with 18 points in the Sea Kings’ game at the Orange County North-South Challenge at El Toro High on Tuesday. Matt Ctvrtlik had 14 points for CdM (6-3), while Tae Le contributed 12 points.

The Sea Kings open Kentfield Marin Catholic Tournament play against Petaluma Casa Grande at 6 p.m. on Friday.
