High School Roundup: Tars win pool

North Orange County Classic

PLACENTIA — Newport Harbor High won its pool by defeating Brea Olinda, 2-0, and rallying to tie Sonora, 1-1, on Saturday at Valencia High.

Alex Avila scored in the 32nd minute on an assist from Marlon Nava against Sonora, against which Hugo Enriquez had three saves.

Bryant Reyes and David Bernal scored and Alan Alcantara and Enriquez posted assists for the Sailors against Brea.

Victor Negrete had three saves to preserve the shutout.

The Tars (4-2-1) meet host Valencia in the semifinals on Monday at 10:45 a.m.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Newport Harbor 72, Oxford Academy 38

CYPRESS — Junior Charlie Stassel had 19 points to lead the Sailors in the ninth-place game of the Oxford Academy Tournament on Saturday.

Stassel earned all-tournament honors for the Tars (5-7), who received 13 points from Joey Faris.

Newport Harbor resumes play on Dec. 27 at the Cactus Jam in Scottsdale, Ariz.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Corona del Mar 55, Segerstrom 31

SANTA ANA — Natalia Bruening had 30 points and 15 rebounds in the seventh-place game of the Segerstrom Tournament on Saturday at Segerstrom High.

Kat Hess scored six for CdM, and Melody Yoo had five points, including a three-pointer.

CdM (6-3) plays next at the Ayala Best of the West Tournament, opening against Perris on Saturday at 3 p.m.
