Purdue 69, UC Irvine 44

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Sophomore guard Irene Chavez had 10 points to lead the visiting Anteaters in the opening round of the Purdue Tournament on Friday.

Tierra Hicks had eight points and a team-best five rebounds off the bench for het Anteaters (1-10), who have lost nine straight.

Purdue is 5-4.

UCI, which trailed only 33-27 at halftime, meets Wright State on Saturday at 9 a.m.

Carroll College 67, Vanguard 55

LAS VEGAS – Bailey Snelling scored 21 points and Kalee Junkermeier had 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead Carroll College to the win over the third-ranked Lions the second game of the Las Vegas Frontier Shootout Friday.

The Carroll defense held Vanguard to 18-of-53 (.340) from the field and held leading scorer Riley Holsinger to just six points, 19 under her season average. Vanguard’s second leading score Samantha Duecette also netted only six points, 15 under her season average.

In an earlier game, the Vanguard topped visiting Montana Western, 77-53. Holsinger made five of seven three-point attempts on her way to 35 points.

Vanguard made nine of 16 from beyond the arc (56.3%).

Irvine Valley 61, Orange Coast 38

Irvine Valley sprinted to a 38-14 halftime lead and breezed to the victory over the host Pirates in the semifinals of the Erin Tomlinson Coast Christmas Classic.

Deanna Fink led OCC (3-8) with 13 points. The Pirates face Canyons in the third-place game at 3 p.m. today. Irvine Valley plays Palomar for the championship at 5 p.m.
