High School Roundup: Eagles edge Sailors, 1-0

Estancia High sophomore forward Kevin Pizarro converted an assist from senior Abraham Cortez in the 30th minute for the only goal in the Eagles’ 1-0 nonleague win at Newport Harbor on Friday night.

The Eagles (3-1) had just four shots in the defensive-oriented game, in which Estancia junior goallkeeper Enrique Valle had three saves.

It was the first goal scored against the Sailors this season. Newport Harbor (0-1-2) had played Corona del Mar and Servite to scoreless ties previously.

Pizarro took a pass from Cortez on the right wing about 15 yards out and directed a shot inside the far post for his team-leading third goal of the season.

Estancia Coach Robert Castellano singled out the play of senior center midfielder Marco Pineda and junior Christian Monroy.

The Eagles return to action on Monday at Pacifica, then play host to Corona del Mar on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Newport Harbor 8, Foothill 7

SANTA ANA — Kate Pipkin scored the game-winning goal with 27 seconds left to lead the Sailors to the nonleaguge win Friday.

Newport Harbor entered ranked No. 3 in CIF Southern Section Division 1, and Foothill No. 2.

Christian O’Beck led the Sailors (3-0) with three goals, Pipkin and Ellie Reid each had two goals, one assist and one steal.

Chanel Schilling scored a goal and Heidi Fults had an assist and a steal.

Goalies Cleo Harrington (eight saves, one steal) and Carlee Kapana (nine saves, three steals) anchored the defense.

Newport Harbor will play host to Back Bay rival Corona del Mar Friday at 5 p.m.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Corona del Mar 2, Marina 0

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Evan Schwartz and Jake Kim each recorded goals for the Sea Kings in a nonleague match on the road Friday.

Jay Damon, Brandon Huang, Daniel McCabe and Nate Pozin helped CdM (2-1-1) produce its second shutout in a row.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Corona del Mar 61, Army-Navy 59

Sophomore guard Sam Kobrine scored 15 of his 17 points in the first half on Friday, leading the Sea Kings to the final of the CdM Beach Bash.

CdM (4-0) plays defending tournament champion Tustin on Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

Kevin Fults finished with 10 points for CdM and Coach Ryan Schachter said Ryan Stone and Kevin Manchester each played well defensively.

Sage Hill 62, California Academy of Mathematics and Science 27

Junior guard Krishan Tarsadia finished with 16 points in a nonleague game at home for the Lightning on Friday.

Tyler Hague had 15 points for Sage Hill (4-2).

The Lightning play host to Estancia on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Estancia 57, Whitney 48

Senior guard Josh Mendoza’s 23 points led the Eagles in Friday’s nonleague game at home.

Kaena McReynolds finished with 10 points and Connor Brown had eight points for Estancia (3-2).

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Corona del Mar 66, Dana Hills 32

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Sophomore forward Natalia Bruening finished with 18 points on Friday, helping the Sea Kings advance to the final of the Ocean View Tournament.

CdM will play Pacifica in the championship on Saturday at 6 p.m.

CdM’s Maria King had 15 points and Krista Anderson added 12 points. Keaton Gaughan had 11 points.

Pacifica 67, Estancia 50

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Senior guard Celia Duran produced 18 points on Friday, but the Eagles suffered their first setback of the season, costing them a chance to advance to the final of the Ocean View Tournament.

Estancia (6-1) plays Aliso Niguel in the third-place game on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

Michelle Simmons had 11 points for the Eagles and Eliza Jason added seven points.

Newport Harbor 40, Los Amigos 34

FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Senior forward Jennifer Lopez led the Sailors with 15 points in an Ocean View Tournament game on Friday at Los Amigos High.

Kendra Munguia had six points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Newport Harbor (4-4).

The Sailors close out tournament play against Santa Ana Valley on Saturday Los Amigos High at 3 p.m.

Orangewood Academy 62, Costa Mesa 39

ANAHEIM — Danielle Obong scored 15 points to lead the Mustangs in the Loara Tournament game Friday.

Katherine Lawrence finished with eight points for Costa Mesa (5-2).

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Woodbridge 3, Sage Hill 1

Freshman Marina Wild scored for the host Lightning in the nonleague game Friday.

Goalie Lauren Thunen made 11 saves for Sage Hill (1-3-2).
