High School Roundup: CdM girls’ soccer wins season opener

CHINO HILLS — Elise Roche scored to lead the Corona del Mar High girls’ soccer team to a 1-0 win over Ayala in a group-play game of the Aliso Cup and CdM’s season opener Tuesday.

Brynn Motal delivered a long throw-in for the assist to Roche, who shot into the net from 18 yards out.

Goalie Ally Lozano made two saves in the shutout for CdM.

The Sea Kings play host to rival Newport Harbor Thursday at 3:15 p.m. in another group-play game.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Newport Harbor 16, Long Beach Wilson 6

LONG BEACH — Katie Kearns scored five goals and recorded five steals for the Sailors in the nonleague game at Belmont Plaza pool Tuesday.

Ellie Reid (four goals, one assist), Kate Pipkin (three goals, three assists, two steals), Chanel Schilling (one goal, one assist), Kate Yasko (one goal), Isabel Leveque (one goal), Rachel Whitelegge (one goal, one steal), Carlee Kapana (seven saves, one assist) for Newport Harbor (2-0).

The Sailors next play host to Foothill Friday at 3 p.m.

Isabelle Cruz, Katarina Freiberger and Emily Rodriguez scored for the Eagles in the nonleague game Tuesday at Estancia.

The Eagles (2-0) play at Irvine Thursday at 5 p.m.

Goalie Kayla Gratzer made six saves for the Lightning to open the Irvine Tournament on Friday.

El Modena 2, Sage Hill 1

Lexi Magliarditi scored for the Lightning in the Irvine Tournament Saturday.

Kayla Gratzer made six saves in goal for Sage Hill.

Woodbridge 1, Sage Hill 1

Claire Novotny scored the equalizer for the Ligthning in the Irvine tournament Saturday.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Corona del Mar 3, Marina 2

Seniors Evan Schwartz and Kyle Martin scored the first two goals for the Sea Kings in their season opener on Monday.

Junior Blake Munger scored the game-winner for the Sea Kings.

CdM next plays at Edison on Wednesday.
