Halftime: Newport Harbor 14, Huntington Beach 14

Things are much more even in the second meeting between Newport Harbor High and Huntington Beach.

They are tied, 14-14, at halftime of the CIF Southern Section Southwest Division championship at Angel Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The game is much more competitive than the one that took place on Nov. 8 at Huntington Beach, where the Oilers won, 40-14, handing the Sailors their worst setback of the year and costing the Sailors a share of the Sunset League title.

A month later, the two Sunset League schools met on a wet field. The rain stopped prior to the opening kickoff at 2 p.m.

The Oilers took a 7-0 lead late in the opening quarter. They capped a 12 play, 92-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run by running back Travis Heer.

On the ensuing possession, Newport Harbor responded. The Sailors covered 57 yards in six plays and tied the game at 7-7 on fullback Trevor Shaw’s one-yard touchdown run.

The Sailors went ahead for the first time when quarterback Cole Norris found wide receiver Cory Stowell wide open down the sideline. The two hooked up on a 31-yard touchdown at the 7:38 mark in the second quarter.

The Oilers came right back. Quarterback Kai Ross hit receiver Maurice Barber on two key passes, one going for 42 yards and the other for 23. The second completion went for a touchdown and knotted the game at 14-14 midway through the second quarter.
