Briefs: Trio competes in Canada

The United States women’s senior national water polo team, featuring Newport Harbor High alumna Kaleigh Gilchrist, Corona del Mar sophomore Maddie Musselman and UC Irvine redshirt junior Danielle Warde, is 1-2 after its first three matches at the Canada Cup in Gatineau, Canada.

Team USA fell to Australia, 10-8, in its most recent game Thursday. Gilchrist, a senior at USC, scored three goals in the loss. Musselman drew a penalty shot, had a field block and a steal.

Earlier in the tournament, Musselman had her first career senior national team goal in another loss to Australia.

Team USA plays host Canada on Saturday at 3:45 p.m. Pacific time. The match can be streamed online at https://new.livestream.com/accounts/6342014/canadacup2013.

UCLA, Alvarado in title game

The UCLA women’s soccer team, which has Corona del Mar High alumna Annie Alvarado on its roster, has advanced to the NCAA Division I title match after beating top-seeded Virginia in penalty kicks at the College Cup in Cary, N.C.

UCLA won the match in PKs, 4-2, after the teams played to a 1-1 tie. The Bruins (21-1-3), who have a 20-game unbeaten streak, will play Florida State (21-1-3) in the title game on Sunday at noon Pacific time. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU.

Alvarado, the 2011-12 Newport-Mesa Player of the Year as a junior at CdM, is a freshman midfielder at UCLA. She has appeared in 19 matches this season for the Bruins.
