Briefs: Four Pirates lauded for all-conference

Orange Coast College sophomores Sarah Guest and Devan Ellison have been named first-team All-Orange Empire Conference in women’s soccer.

Freshmen Manuela Ramirez and Cori Haney represent the Pirates on the second team.

Ellison, a midfielder, had three goals and three assists and her nine points ranked second on the team that finished 7-8-4, 5-7-3 in conference.

Guest, a defender, helped Coach Kevin Smith’s Pirates post seven shutouts, including six in conference play. She had one assist.

Haney’ another midfielder, tied for the team lead with four goals, while Ramirez contributed as a defender and also had one assist.

Saddleback’s Danyelle Allen was named MVP, while Ian Woodhead of Santiago Canyon was named Coach of the Year.

Six Pirates chosen

Orange Coast College sophomores Scott Brush and Luis Martinez, as well as freshmen Massimo Navarretta and Jake Davis have been named first-team All-Orange Empire Conference in men’s water polo.

Sophomores Dillon Avilla and Garret Glore represented the Pirates on the second team.

The standouts helped OCC finish third in the Southern California Regional championships and compile an 18-12 record. The Pirates were 5-2 in the Orange Empire Conference.

Navarretta is a goalkeeper out of Newport Harbor High, while Davis had eight goals and one assist in a 20-18 win over Los Angeles Valley in the third-place game of the SoCal Regionals.

Scott Taylor, who was an All-CIF goalie and also a former coach at Costa Mesa High, was named Coach of the Year after guiding Golden West to its 26th consecutive conference title.

OCC quintet heralded

Orange Coast College sophomores Lauren Babb and Katie Hansen, as well as freshman Alexa Crayfield, have been named first-team All-Orange Empire Conference in women’s water polo.

Sophomore Andi Sandoval and freshman Amy Jensen represent the Pirates on the second team.

OCC defeated Golden West in the third-place game of the conference tournament, then fell to the Rustlers in the first round of the Southern California Regional championships.

The Pirates finished 13-13, including a 5-4 mark in conference play.
