Briefs: Bubica honored

UC Irvine junior Marisa Bubica was named Big West Conference Player of the Week in women’s volleyball.

The 6-foot-3 outside hitter led the Anteaters to an upset over third-place Cal State Northridge on Saturday in the regular-season finale at home.

She tied a career-high with 24 kills and hit .455 against the Matadors after coming off the bench in the four-game triumph.

Bubica committed just four errors in 44 attempts.

It’s the second conference player of the week honor this season for Bubica, who led the team (19-12, 9-7 in the Big West) with a 4.12-per-set kill average and totaled 342 kills to go along with 52 digs and 31 blocks.

UCI trio honored

UC Irvine standouts Marisa Bubica, Allison Lee and Cassidy Pickrell have been named to the 17-player All-Big West Conference women’s volleyball team.

Bubica, a 6-foot-3 junior outside hitter, led the Anteaters (19-12, 9-7 in conference) with a 4.12 per-set kill average. She hit .296 with 31 total blocks and 52 digs. She received honorable mention in all-conference voting in 2013.

Pickrell, a 6-1 sophomore outside hitter, led UCI with 407 kills and posted a .351 kill average. She had 43 ace serves, 328 digs and 34 total blocks. She was named to the conference’s All-Freshman team last season.

Lee, a 6-0 senior opposite, had 361 kills, a team-best 44 aces, 376 digs, which ranked second on the team, and 59 total blocks.

Sophomore setter Shelley Anderson, another all-freshman performer last season, received honorable mention, as did UCI teammate Arden Davis, a sophomore libero.
