College Roundup: OCC women’s XC wins state crown

State championships

FRESNO — Orange Coast College won its second consecutive state title in dominant fashion on Saturday at Woodrow Park.

Sophomore Leanne Allen led the Pirates, finishing sixth in 18 minutes, 18.26 seconds, followed by sophomore teammate Karen Silvas (eighth in 18:28.47).

OCC totaled 73 points, 53 better than runner-up Glendale.

Rounding out the OCC scorers were sophomore Raeanna Cortez (17th in 18:57.65), sophomore Allison Nagel (22nd in 19:05.47) and sophomore Guadalupe Cantoran (27th in 19:17.94).

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Orange Coast 2, Ventura 1

VENTURA — Freshman Karly Freeman scored in the second overtime Saturday at Ventura to propel the No. 11-seeeded Pirates into the second round of the Southern California Regional playoffs on Tuesday.

OCC (13-3-4) will face No. 14-seeded Los Angeles Pierce (14-4-3) on Tuesday at Orange Coast at 7 p.m.

Freeman had the assist on Devan Ellison’s goal in the 57th minute.

Shelle Zito had the assist on the game-winner, which eliminated No. 6-seeded Ventura (14-5-2).

Emily Harrier had five saves for OCC.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

State championships

FRESNO — Sophomore Luis Morales finished fifth to lead Orange Coast College to a second-place finish on Saturday at Woodrow Park.

Morales finished in 20:22.14 to pace the Pirates, whose 93 points were 21 behind victorious American River.

OCC freshman Jose Ortiz was 14th in 20:45.26, while sophomore Jay Bonthius was 16th in 20:50.13, and freshman Lucio Ramirez was 17th in 20:51.21.

OCC freshman Conner Garcia (41st in 21:17.37) also scored for the Pirates.

MEN’S SOCCER

Rio Hondo 2, Orange Coast 1

LA VERNE — No. 9-seeded OCC saw its nine-game unbeaten streak snap as the Pirates lost their Southern Regional playoff opener Saturday at the University of La Verne.

Emmanuel Varela scored twice for No. 8-seeded Rio Hondo (13-4-5). His second goal in the 65th minute gave Rio Hondo a 2-0 lead.

OCC (10-6-4) avoided the shutout in the 87th minute when Jorge Sanchez, a Costa Mesa High product, scored an unassisted goal. Sanchez, a sophomore forward, finished with nine goals and six assists to lead the Pirates this season.

OCC won its first Orange Empire Conference title since 1991 this season.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Idaho 68, UC Irvine 63

Moscow, Idaho — Junior Madison McKenney poured in a career-high 22 points, but it was not enough as the Anteaters lost the nonconference game Saturday.

Senior forward Camille Buckley recorded 18 points and 13 rebounds, while guard Jennifer Tsurumoto had eight points for UCI (3-2).

Idaho is 3-1.

UCI will travel to the Loyola Marymount Thanksgiving Tournament Friday and Saturday, playing the host Lions Friday at 3 p.m.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Long Beach State def. UC Irvine

UC Irvine was swept by Long Beach State for the second time this season, losing the Big West Conference match 25-21, 25-18, 25-23 Saturday night at Crawford Court.

UCI, held to a .152 hitting percentage, was led by Aly Squires, who recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs to go along with three block assists and an ace. Shannon Fleming chipped in nine kills while Shelley Anderson knocked down four kills while dishing out 31 assists. Arden Davis topped all players with 13 digs for UCI (14-14, 5-9 in conference).

Long Beach State is 16-11, 9-5.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Cal State San Marcos 80, Vanguard 64

OCEANSIDE — Chris Gorman scored 21 points to lead the Lions in the nonconference game Saturday.

DeAngelo Jones added 10 points for Vanguard (5-2).

Cal State San Marcos is 6-0.
