The Newport Beach Water Polo Club 14-and-under boys captured second place at the TYR Champions Cup in Dallas, Texas, which concluded Nov. 9.

Newport Beach, coached by Stefano Ragosa, was undefeated into the tournament semifinals, tallying wins against Chicago, LA Premier, Commerce and 680 Drivers. In the semifinals, Newport Beach got past San Diego Shores, 11-7.

Newport Beach fell in the gold-medal match to Stanford, 12-8.

“Some of the boys were really emotional during the game, and that did not allow them to play at their best,” Ragosa said. “Evaluating the game afterwards, I think Stanford earned the gold medal, and we did not play well. However, I am proud of the boys, they have shown probably the best level of water polo at 14U I have seen in long time for few games. We just missed one game to complete the mission, but it is still early in the season and I know most of them will improve a lot. Next time we will try again.”
