Briefs: Tars, CdM win boys’ water polo flips
The Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar High boys’ water polo teams each won coin flips and will play host to CIF Southern Section Division 1 quarterfinal matches on Saturday.
No. 3-seeded Newport Harbor plays host to Dana Hills at 11:30 a.m. CdM plays host to top-seeded Mater Dei at 1 p.m.
The Sunset League champion Sailors (22-4) used seven goals from senior Luca Cupido and got past Long Beach Millikan, 16-4, in a first-round match Wednesday. They have not played Dana Hills, the South Coast League champion, this season.
Senior Charlie Rodosky scored three goals to lead Corona del Mar (17-11) over Huntington Beach, 10-5, in a first-round match Wednesday. Saturday’s match will be the Sea Kings’ second in two weeks against the Monarchs.
Mater Dei beat CdM, 15-3, in a nonleague game at Mater Dei on Nov. 2. The Monarchs (27-1) are the three-time defending Division 1 champions and feature eight Newport Beach residents, including senior USC commit and James Walters.

Galloway to UCI
Jonathan Galloway, a 6-10 power forward at Salesian High in Richmond, Calif., has signed a national letter of intent with the UC Irvine men’s basketball program, Anteaters Coach Russell Turner announced Thursday.
The addition of Galloway could give UCI at least eight players standing 6-8 and taller next season.
“Jonathan has a bright future as his game continues to develop and his best years are still to come,” Turner said. “He will add athleticism and shot-blocking ability to our expanding front line.
“Jonathan is a tremendous basketball talent and a great fit academically for UC Irvine. His commitment to academics is equally as high as his basketball ceiling. He has benefited from his athletic and educational experience at prestigious Salesian High,” Turner said.
As a junior last season, Galloway averaged 5.2 points and 5.3 rebounds for the Pride, which finished 30-4, and won the North Coast Section Division IV championship and the Northern California Regional title. Salesian was ranked in the nation’s top-10 at one point during the season. Four players on last year’s Salesian team signed with Division I schools.
“Jonathan has always been successful academically and on the court. We are all very excited that he has chosen to attend UC Irvine. We know that with the coaching staff there, he will continue to grow as a student and player,” said Salesian Coach Bill Mellis.
Galloway chose UCI over schools such as Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, UC Davis, Pacific, Pepperdine, Portland, Montana and Sacramento State.
Galloway also played for the NorCal Wildcats AAU team coached by Phil Doherty, who current UCI players Will Davis and Travis Souza also played for.
“I feel it’s a good fit,” Galloway told NorCalPreps.com. “I liked the players, the campus and the coaching staff. Coach Turner will help me in reaching my potential.”

VU’s Cantarella collects accolade
Vanguard University sophomore Carla Cantarella has been named NAIA National Player of the Week.
Cantarella, a 5-foot-5 setter and defensive specialist, had 17 assists and 18 digs in the Lions’ five-game upset of No. 2-ranked Concordia on Nov. 5 at Vanguard. It was the first loss in Golden State Athletic Conference play for the Eagles in three years.
Cantarella also had 20 assists and 10 digs in a three-game conference sweep at San Diego Christian on Saturday. She made no errors on service receive in the two matches.
No. 10-ranked Vanguard entered this week with a record of 20-6, 8-4.
