MEN’S BASKETBALL

Pacific 84, UC Irvine 79

STOCKTON — The visiting Anteaters were outscored, 11-6, in the final 2:52 after pulling even, 73-73, in the nonconference game on Tuesday.

UCI (0-2) shot 50% from the field (24 for 48), but netted just 25 of 40 foul shots (62.5%), while the Tigers (2-0) netted 31 of 37 free-throw attempts (83.8%) to overcome 40.3% shooting from the field (25 for 62).

Sophomore guard Alex Young led UCI with 17 points, netting six of nine from the field and two for three from three-point range. His four assists also topped the ‘Eaters.

Senior Chris McNealy had 15 points, junior Will Davis added 12 and freshman Luke Nelson had 11 off the bench.

Freshman Mamadou Ndiaye had a career-high nine points, six rebounds and two blocks.

UCI lost the battle in rebounds (39-33) and turnovers (14-8).

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Vanguard def. Westmont

SANTA BARBARA — The visiting No. 10-ranked Lions defeated the No. 14-ranked Warriors, 25-18, 25-23, 13-25, 25-19, in the Golden State Athletic Conference match on Tuesday.

Vanguard (21-6, 9-4 in conference) was led by sophomore setter Carla Cantarella, who had 19 assists and 12 digs.

Rachael Barker had 12 kills for the Lions, for whom Stephanie Flores and Charlotte Heerlyn each had five kills and six block assists. Flores hit .455.

Senior Kelly Heenan led the winners with 22 digs.

Westmont fell to 20-8, 6-7.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Orange Coast 0, Golden West 0

Pirates’ goalkeeper Emily Harrier made five saves to help the Pirates maintain second place in the Orange Empire Conference on Tuesday night with one game remaining.

OCC is 11-3-4, 9-3-3 in conference and leads Cypress by one point and Saddleback by two points in the race for second place behind champion Santiago Canyon.

OCC plays host to Irvine Valley on Friday at 3 p.m. at LeBard Stadium.

Golden West is 7-7-6, 6-5-4.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Irvine 68, South Dakota 64

Senior Camille Buckley had 15 points and eight rebounds to lead the host Anteaters to their first season-opening win in 11 seasons in the nonconference game on Sunday.

Senior Jennifer Tsurumoto had 11 points and senior Vanessa Aguilar added 10 for the winners, who last won an opener in 2002. Aguilar was four for six from the field and two for three from three-point range, while adding three assists.

Sophomore Mokum Fajemisin had six points, four rebounds and four blocked shots off the bench, while senior starter Jazmyne White contributed four points, five rebounds, three assists, two blocks and one steal.

UCI visits Pepperdine on Thursday at 7 p.m.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Las Vegas Invitational

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Vanguard University split a pair of games in the two-day event, topping Warner Pacific, 82-66, on Friday after falling to Campbellsville of Kentucky, 58-42, on Thursday.

Senior Preston Wynne led five starters in double figures with 19 points on Friday, adding five assists and three steals.

Chris Gorman (17), DeAngelo Jones (15), Keith Mason (11) and Zach Allmon (10) rounded out the top Vanguard scorers. Allmon had a team-best 11 rebounds, while Gorman had five rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Vanguard shot 21.9% in the loss on Thursday, when Jones had 15 points and Wynne added 12.

The Lions play host to UC Merced on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
