GIRLS’ TENNIS

Sage Hill 10, Santa Monica 8

The Lightning scored four set wins in the last round to stun Santa Monica and advance to Monday’s CIF Southern Section Division 2 quarterfinals.

Amira Tarsadia and Abby Ruck swept at No. 1 doubles.

No. 1 singles player Jaclyn Gerschultz, No. 2 Isabella Deckey and No. 3 Lauren Fishman each earned wins.

Sage Hill needed four wins because it would have lost on games if the match went to a tie.

Celine Wang/Crystal Yu went 1-1 before Yu was replaced by Maya Byrd in the last round for a win, and Tess Alexander and Marina Anderson took two of three, for a total of seven doubles wins.

Alexander and Anderson were down 0-3 in the last round before rolling off six games in a row to put Sage at nine wins. With Tarsadia/Ruck leading 5-2 it looked as if the Lightning were going to win. Santa Monica won two games in a row and led 15-40 to tie the set at 5-5. Sage saved three game points, had two match points before Tarsadia hit a winner down the line passing shot off a 13-ball rally to win the match.

Sage Hill most likely will play No. 2-seeded Murrieta Valley, winner of the Southwestern League, away on Monday.
