College Roundup: UCI clinches at least share of title

RIVERSIDE — The visiting Anteaters rallied from a 1-0 deficit to clinch at least a share of the Big West Conference South Division title in the conference clash on Wednesday night.

Christopher Santana scored on an assist by Marco Franco in the 81st minute to break a 1-1 tie created when Enrique Cardenas scored an unassisted goal for the ‘Eaters in the 79th minute.

The win improves UCI to 11-4-3, 6-2-1 in conference. Its 19 points (three for a win and one for a tie) are three better than Cal State Northridge (5-3-1 in conference) after the Matadors topped Cal State Fullerton, 1-0, on Wednesday.

Northridge visits UCI on Saturday at 7 p.m. in hopes of earning a win and a share of the South Division crown.

UCI, for which Michael Breslin made four saves, is now 7-2 in one-goal games this season after going 2-11 in one-goal contests in 2012.

Westmont 4, Vanguard 2

SANTA BARBARA — Juan Arellano opened the scoring for the visiting Lions, but Westmont scored three straight to run away with the first-round contest of the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament on Wednesday.

Jesus Fregoso added a goal, while Nahum Paz and Luke Kadillak were credited with assists for the Lions.

Vanguard (8-8-1) posted a 14-6 advantage on shots, but all four of shots on goal for Westmont (11-6) went in.

Vanguard’s season comes to a close and Westmont advances to the semifinals against Biola on Saturday.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Golden West def. Orange Coast

The visiting Pirates fell to 10-5, 5-5 in Orange Empire Conference play by dropping the four-game match on Wednesday.

OCC is now in fifth place in the OEC, where Golden West (14-2, 8-2) sits in second place.
