CHINO HILLS — Alyaa Abdulghany always tells herself to go at least two-under par in every competitive round. It usually helps achieve her goal to win.

The Corona del Mar High sophomore actually went three-under on Thursday and it led to huge success, as she won the CIF Southern Section girls’ golf individual championship.

She fired a 69 at Western Hills Country Club in Chino Hills. She was one stroke better than Los Osos junior Angella Then and Diamond Bar freshman Crystal Wang in the field of 108 players.

Abdulghany, the Pacific Coast League champion, advances to the WSCGA Regional State Qualifier at Arrowhead Country Club in San Bernardino on Nov. 13.

She needs to be one of the top nine individuals not on a top-three team to advance to the CIF State Championship at Red Hill Country Club in Rancho Cucamonga on Nov. 18.

She placed third at the CIF Southern Section Individual Regional at Dad Miller Golf Course in Anaheim to advance to Western Hills. She also was the medalist at the CIF Southern Section Team Southern Divisional on the Mesa Linda course at Costa Mesa Country Club.

“Recently, I’ve gotten toward the next step,” Abdulghany told the Daily Pilot after recently being named High School Athlete of the Week. “I have much higher goals for myself. I always tell myself, every round I have a requirement of at least two-under [par]. Obviously, depending on the course, how easy it is. But the requirement would be to be going under [par].”
