Jessica Chase had 13 kills and Rachael Barker had 12 kills to lead the No. 10-ranked Lions to an upset of the No. 2-ranked Eagles Tuesday at the Pit.

Vanguard won the Golden State Athletic Conference match, 23-25, 25-19, 25-23, 21-25, 15-10, dealing Concordia its conference loss.

Carla Cantarella had amassed 27 assists and 18 digs, while Kelly Heenan led Vanguard with 21 digs.

Myranda Cunningham contributed 19 assists for the Lions.

Jessica Israel led Concordia (20-2, 10-1) with 19 kills.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 101, Cal Tech 59

All five starters scored in double figures as the host Lions opened their season in the nonconference game on Monday.

Senior Preston Wynne led the winners with 19 points, followed by DeAngelo Jones (18), Chris Gorman (15), Zach Allmon (11) and Keith Mason (11).

Noel Larkins had six assists and three steals off the bench for the Lions, who forced 37 turnovers and led by as many as 45.

Jones had five rebounds, five steals, four assists and two blocked shots for the winners. He also made four of six field-goal attempts and was 10 of 12 from the free-throw line.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 69, UC Santa Barbara 66

SANTA BARBARA — Junior guard Nicole Ballestero scored 24 points to lead the NAIA’s top-ranked team in an exhibition game on Monday.

Sophomore Samantha Doucette made three of four three-point attempts on her way to 16 points, while senior Taylor Belmont added 11 points and eight assists for the winners, who shot 49% from the field and limited the Gauchos to 39.3%.

Stanford 79, Vanguard 47

STANFORD — The Lions shot just 27.3% from the field and forced only three Cardinal turnovers in the exhibition road game on Sunday.

Vanguard junior guard Nicole Ballestero, a junior who earned NAIA All-American honors as a sophomore, had 25 points for the Lions, who were outrebounded, 53-25.
