High School Roundup: Sage grabs first league win

Quarterback CJ McCord threw four touchdown passes to lead the Sage Hill School football team to its first league win since 2011, a 35-8 Academy League victory over Calvary Chapel Downey Friday at Sage Hill.

McCord went 11 for 18 for 199 yards and one interception to help the Lightning (4-5, 1-2 in league) break a seven-game skid in the Academy League.

Sam Masarik led the receivers with seven catches for 192 yards and three touchdowns. Luca Bonvicini caught the other touchdown from McCord.

Beau Roth ran for 165 yards on 15 carries for Sage Hill. Roth also stood out on defense with nine tackles, eight solo, and one interception.

Calvary Chapel Downey dropped to 2-4, 0-2.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Corona del Mar 13, Northwood 5

The Sea Kings finished the regular season 16-3, 8-2 in the Pacific Coast League, good enough for second place in league Friday.

In doubles, seniors Kenzie Purcifull and Kimmia Naaseh swept at No. 1, 7-5, 6-2, 6-1, for CdM, ranked No. 4 in CIF Southern Section Division 1.

Siena Sharf and Jasie Dunk won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles before being subbed out.

In singles Elena Fish won 6-4, 6-2 and Riley Gerdau won 6-2, 6-2. Both were subbed out for the final round.

Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions

SANTA BARBARA — Corona del Mar High won in the first round, but lost in the quarterfinals Friday at Santa Barbara High.

The Sea Kings (20-5) beat Santa Barbara, 25-23, 17-25, 25-19, 20-25, 15-6, led by Hayley Hodson’s 21 kills. Katie Craig added 11 kills and Jessie Harris had seven kills.

Archbishop Mitty defeated CdM, 26-24, 25-13, 25-20. Hodson had 15 kills, Jessie Harris had nine kills and Paige Migliori amassed 22 assists.

The Sea Kings begin with a fifth-place semifinal match Saturday morning.

Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions

SANTA BARBARA — Newport Harbor High split during the first day of action Friday at Santa Barbara High.

Manhattan Beach Mira Costa beat the Sailors in the first round, 22-25, 21-25, 12-25.

Carolyn Bockrath led Newport Harbor (8-20) with 14 kills, Gabby Shelley had nine kills, Ellie Hagadorn amassed 30 assists and Sammie Yeager had 13 digs.

The Sailors then beat Goleta Dos Pueblos, 25-20, 26-24, 25-21. Bockrath had 17 kills, Remy Wilson had seven kills, Kierstyn Yardley had eight digs and Yeager had three aces and 13 digs.

Newport Harbor will continue play in the tournament Saturday morning, starting with a ninth-place semifinal match.
