College Roundup: Vanguard women’s soccer earns share of GSAC title

Vanguard 9, Arizona Christian 0

PHOENIX — Madison Cody had a hat trick and added an assist to help the visiting Lions earn a share of the Golden State Athlete Conference title and earn the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament.

No. 11-ranked Vanguard (15-2-1, 8-2 in conference) tied for first place with No. 6-ranked Westmont, but lost the only meeting between the two this year, giving Westmont the top seed in the GSAC tournament.

Vanguard will play host to an opponent to be determined on Friday.

Rayven Hernandez scored twice and Jennifer Martin had a goal an assist for the Lions, for whom Makenna Yarbor, Nicole Dunn and Asia Kleinmeyer also had goals Saturday.

ACU fell to 2-15, 0-10.

MEN’S SOCCER

Vanguard 3, Arizona Christian 1

PHOENIX — Juan Arellano had a goal and an assist to help the visiting Lions rally in the Golden State Athletic Conference regular-season finale on Saturday.

Vanguard (10-6-1, 6-3-1 in conference) finished third in GSAC regular season and is the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament. The Lions, who have won three straight and are unbeaten in their last four games, play host to No. 6-seeded Biola in the first round of the tournament on Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Luis Valdavia scored to erase a 1-0 deficit in the 35th minute Saturday, then Arellano netted the game-winner in the 50th minute.

Hector Garcia tallied the final goal for the winners, who received assists from Zac Way and Jesus Fregoso.

Brandon Gomez made six saves for the Lions, who posted a 17-10 advantage in shots.

ACU fell to 4-14, 0-10.

Cal State Northridge 2, UC Irvine 0

NORTHRIDGE — The No. 11-ranked Anteaters outshot the Matadors, 22-12, in the Big West Conference road game Saturday.

Cal State Northridge (7-9-2, 3-5-1 in conference) scored in the 62nd and 73rd minute to hand UCI (12-4-2, 4-4-1) its third loss in its last four games.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Concordia def. Vanguard

Sarah McKinney had 11 kills to lead the host Lions, who were swept, 25-22, 25-23, 25-18, in the Golden State Athletic Conference match Saturday.

Kelly Heenan had 17 digs, while Lauren Hays had 21 assists and 11 digs for No. 21-ranked Vanguard (19-11, 8-5 in conference), which has lost two straight and four of its last five.

No. 3-ranked Concordia is 27-2, 11-1.

Orange Coast def. Santa Ana

Kerrigan Hecht had 13 to lead the Pirates to a 25-18, 25-8, 25-22 Orange Empire Conference win Friday.

Danielle Boyette led OCC (12-3, 6-3 in conference) with 25 assists. Sierra Brown and Kasse-Ann Dela Cruz had 10 digs each.

Santa Ana is 4-12, 1-8.

OCC plays at Fullerton on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

MEN’S WATER POLO

Pepperdine 11, UC Irvine 9

MALIBU — The No. 11-ranked Waves opened a 4-0 lead and was never headed in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contest Saturday.

No. 10-ranked UCI (13-9, 1-5 in conference) was led by Jared Osborn who had two goals.

Pepperdine is 9-11, 1-5.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

Big West Conference Championship

RIVERSIDE — UC Irvine sophomore Isaiah Thompson finished 12th and the Anteaters finished seventh on Saturday at UC Riverside.

Thompson completed the 8,000-meter course in 24 minutes, 36.6 seconds.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

Big West Conference Championship

RIVERSIDE — Senior Kaycee Holcomb finished 16th to lead UC Irvine, which finished eighth Saturday at UC Riverside.

Holcomb ran the 6,000-meter course in 21 minutes, 35.2 seconds.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Cal 75, Vanguard 45

BERKELEY — Junior Samantha Doucette had 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead the visiting Lions in the season-opening exhibition game Saturday.

Vanguard shot 25.8% from the field (16 for 62).

The Lions, ranked No. 3 in the NAIA preseason poll, play at Stanford on Sunday at 2 p.m.
