High School Roundup: CdM’s Hansen wins PCL girls’ XC title

GIRLS’ CROSS COUNTRY

Pacific Coast League finals

IRVINE — Kirsten Hansen led Corona del Mar High to the title, as she won the individual crown, finishing in 17 minutes, 24 seconds Thursday at Mason Park.

CdM came in first with 32 points, followed by Northwood (53) and Woodbridge (61).

Raquel Powers (third in 17:35), Tess St. Geme (fifth in 17:41), Elin Wolker (seventh in 17:44) and Hannah Crane (16th in 18:36) also competed for CdM.

The Sea Kings qualified for the CIF Southern Section Division 3 preliminaries Nov. 15 at Mt. San Antonio College.

Orange Coast League finals

ORANGE — Costa Mesa High finished fourth in the race at Irvine Regional Park Wednesday.

Laguna Beach won the title.

Gabriela Perez led Costa Mesa with a ninth-place finish in 19:17.

BOYS’ CROSS COUNTRY

Pacific Coast League finals

IRVINE – Parker Norstrand led Corona del Mar to third place, as he won the PCL individual title, finishing in 14 minutes, 51 seconds Thursday at Mason Park.

Woodbridge won the team title with 30 points, followed by Northwood (48) and CdM (56).

Leif Hellgren (seventh in 15:29), Matt Paragas (10th in 15:33) and Thomas Robertson (11th in 15:37) also competed for CdM.

Orange Coast League finals

ORANGE — Costa Mesa High’s Anuare Magana won the individual league title in 15 minutes, 10 seconds and led the Mustangs to a third-place finish.

Costa Mesa qualified for the CIF Southern Section Division 4 preliminaries Nov. 15 at Mt. San Antonio College.

John Hernandez finished eighth for the Mustangs in 16:12, Elliott Hachac was 14th in 16:29 and Jayson Baker was 16th in 16:51.

FIELD HOCKEY

Newport Harbor 4, Marina 1

HUNTINGTON BEACH — The Sailors overcame a 1-0 deficit and earned third place in the Los Angeles Field Hockey Assn. Tournament of Champions Thursday at Huntington Beach High.

Haley Martinez scored the equalizer. Cameron Dewan, Jordan Blanchfield and Sophie Schwarzenbach also scored for Newport Harbor (18-7-1).

Goalkeeper Erika Nilsson made four saves for the Sailors.

Edison beat Huntington Beach, 4-0, in the title game.

Newport Harbor’s Jordan Blanchfield, Mia Bagiu and Peyton Groves earned all-tournament team honors.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Finis Memorial Cup

SAN JOSE — Corona del Mar High split it’s first two games of the tournament Friday, beating Gunn, 18-11, before falling to Coronado, 10-9.

Brendan Hack had six goals in the win over Gunn while Ashton Jajonie had four goals, two assists and two steals. Foster Hoose and Patrick Ong each scored twice, and Nigel Bress made seven saves.

CdM ‎will play in a fifth-place semifinal match Saturday at 9 a.m. at Bellarmine Prep.

Estancia 13, Westminster 5

Eli Sperling led the Eagels with four goals in the nonleague game Friday.

Aaron Will scored two goals and Jon Leal made 10 daves for Estancia (10-15)

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions

SANTA BARBARA — Newport Harbor High split its matches on the first day of the tourney Friday at Santa Barbara High.

The Sailors (13-11) fell to La Costa Canyon, 27-29, 25-23, 25-13, 25-14

Brooke Schweitzer had eight kills and nine digs, Jaclyn Brown had six kills, while Remy Wilson and Jessie Rath had five kills each and Sammie Yeager had 24 digs.

The Sailors then defeated Dana Hills, 25-19, 25-8, 25-23. Gabby Shelly led with 10 kills, Schweitzer had eight kills and Yeager had 17 digs.

Newport Harbor resumes play Saturday morning in the consolation semifinal.

Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions

SANTA BARBARA — Corona del Mar High reached the quarterfinals Friday at Santa Barbara.

Campolindo beat the Sea Kings (20-4) in the quarterfinals, 25-22, 25-21, 23-25, 25-22.

Katie Craig (17 kills, 18 digs), Sydney Alacano (12 kills) and Jessie Harris (11 kills) contributed for CdM.

The Sea Kings scored a 25-18, 25-19, 25-21 win over St. Francis to open the tournament.
Natalia Bruening had 11 kills and Harris had 10 kills.

CdM resumes play Saturday.
