College Roundup: UCI men’s soccer upset by UC Riverside

UC Riverside 2, UC Irvine 1

RIVERSIDE — Junior midfielder Eduardo Calzada tied the Big West Conference match in the 80th minute by converting a penalty kick for the Anteaters, but the host Highlanders won it with a goal on a penalty kick in the 89th minute to upset No. 3-ranked UC Irvine on Wednesday.

Goalkeeper Michael Breslin, who made six saves for the Anteaters UCI (11-2-2, 3-2-1 in conference), saw his shutout streak end at 348 minutes.

Hector Romo scored the game-winner for the Highlanders (3-9-2, 2-3-1).

UCI plays host to Cal State Northridge on Saturday at 7 p.m.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Irvine Valley def. Orange Coast

The visiting Lasers posted a 25-16, 25-16, 25-19 sweep in the Orange Empire Conference match on Wednesday.

Sierra Brown, Lehua Alama-Jordan and Danyelle Brown each had seven kills for the Pirates (10-2, 4-2 in conference), ranked No. 6 in the state.

No. 2-ranked IVC improved to 13-0, 6-0.

MEN’S WATER POLO

Orange Coast 21, Saddleback 6

Wyatt Ferris had three goals to lead the host Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game on Wednesday.

Garret Glore, Scott Brush, Joshua Hayashi, Tim Polkman, Matthew John, Bailey Harris and Taos Cadarette had two goals apiece for the winners (12-7, 4-0 in conference).

Saddleback is 6-10, 0-4.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

Orange Coast 12, Saddleback 8

Katelyn Hansen led the host Pirates with six goals in the Orange Empire Conference game Wednesday.

Nathania Cuevas, Lauren Babb and Andrea Sandoval had two goals apiece for the winners (10-7, 3-2 in conference).
