College Roundup: OCC falls to Palomar

ESCONDIDO — Pirates freshman quarterback Kody Whitaker had 321 yards passing in Saturday’s Southern Conference game on the road.

Sophomore receiver A.J. Holman had eight catches for 133 yards for Orange Coast (1-5, 0-2 in conference). Freshman running back Kyle White had 13 carries for 58 yards, including the Pirates’ lone touchdown in the first quarter.

Orange Coast took a 10-0 first-quarter lead on Griff Ames’ 24-yard field goal, but did not score again.

Brett Hollingsworth had 169 yards passing and two second-half touchdown passes to rally Palomar (6-2, 3-1), which also got a 42-yard interception return for a touchdown by Toeafua Amu, one of three interceptions by Palomar defenders on the night.

OCC continues conference play at Saddleback on Oct. 25 at 6 p.m.

MEN’S WATER POLO

UC Irvine 17, Pacific 10

The host Anteaters scored all five first-quarter goals and cruised from there in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Saturday.

Lovre Milos had five goals to lead No. 10-ranked UCI (13-6, 1-2 in conference).

No. 7-ranked UOP fell to 12-7, 0-2.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

Highlander Invitational

RIVERSIDE — UCI Irvine senior Alex Tebbe finished second and sophomore teammate Isaiah Thompson was fifth to help the Anteaters finish fourth at a team on Saturday at UC Riverside.

Tebbe ran the 6,000-meter course in 17 minutes, 51.8 seconds, while Thompson’s time was 18:03.7.

Nolan Del Valle (21st in 18:45.1), Jake Williams (26th in 18:51.2), Munir Kahssay (28th in 18:53.7), and Matt Neev (29th in 18:54.3) also competed for UCI.

UCI’s 79 team points were 56 behind victorious UCR.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

Highlander Invitational

RIVERSIDE — UC Irvine senior Kaycee Holcomb finished 17th as the Anteaters were sixth as a team on Saturday at UC Riverside.

Holcomb completed the 5,000-meter course in 18 minutes, 18 seconds.

Chelsea Schneider (26th in 18:39.4) also placed in the top 30 for UCI, which posted 148 points, 106 behind victorious UC Riverside.

MEN’S SOCCER

Orange Coast 1, Santa Ana 0

The host Pirates upset the Dons despite having six players sidelined for the season with injuries and playing without three others sitting out due to yellow-card violations in the Orange Empire Conference match Friday.

Carlos Valencia converted an assist by Jose Garcia in the 86th minute and Nathan Brown had nine saves to preserve the shutout.

OCC is 4-4-4, 3-2-1, while Santa Ana is 7-2-4, 3-2-1.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine def. UC Riverside

RIVERSIDE — Cassidy Pickrell had a match-high 13 kills to pace the visiting Anteaters to a 25-9, 27-25, 25-27 sweep of the Big West Conference match on Friday.

Arielle Manz, a 6-foot-3 senior middle blocker, hit a career-best .700 with seven kills in 10 total attacks and added four block assists, while Shelley Anderson had 33 assists and Arden Davis chipped in 15 digs for the winners (13-7, 3-3).

The Highlanders fell to 2-15, 0-5.

Orange Coast def. Riverside

The host Pirates posted a 25-13, 25-19, 30-28 sweep in the Orange Empire Conference match Friday.

Lehua Alama-Jordan, an Estancia High product, had 13 kills to led the winners (10-1, 4-1 in conference).

Sierra Brown, a former Newport Harbor High standout, had 12 kills and Danyelle Brown added 11 for OCC, for whom Carina Perez had 15 digs.

RCC fell to 5-9, 2-3.

OCC plays host to first-place Irvine Valley on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Cal Poly SLO 2, UC Irvine 1

The host Anteaters had their winless streak extended to five matches in the Big West Conference contest on Friday.

Cal Poly (8-8, 3-2 in conference) scored the first two goals, before UCI senior Bianca Frontino’s unassisted goal in the 55th minute finalized the scoring.

UCI, 0-3-2 in its last five matches, is 4-7-3, 0-2-1.

Saddleback 2, Orange Coast 0

MISSION VIEJO — The host Gauchos scored in the second and 14th minute on Friday to avenge a 1-0 loss to the Pirates in the first round of Orange Empire Conference play.

Saddleback is now 8-2-3, 4-2-3 in conference.

OCC is 6-6-1, 4-5.
