Girls’ Volleyball: Sailors upset Griffins

Behind Newport Harbor High senior middle blocker Carolyn Bockrath’s 24 kills, the Sailors picked up a 25-22, 25-22, 21-25, 25-19 Sunset League girls’ volleyball upset win at home against Los Alamitos, ranked No. 1 in the CIF Southern Section Division 1-AA poll, on Monday night.

Bockrath, who hit .560, helped Newport Harbor improve to 3-1 in league.

“It was just one of those weird Monday nights we played on and we had that going for us,” said Newport Harbor Coach Dan Glenn, adding that each year the league has matches one Monday during the season because the limited amount of officials available in Orange County on Tuesdays. “I felt like we played well in a loss to Huntington Beach and well in a loss to [Corona del Mar]. We played well again and were able to pull it out against Los Al. It was good to see. We’re getting better. We’re getting over the hump.”

Newport Harbor setter Ellie Hagadorn collected 42 assists, while outside hitter Katie Duhoux came off the bench and recorded nine kills.

Logan Grove finished with 10 digs and two services aces and Samantha Yeager had 14 digs and one ace.

The Sailors play at Marina on Wednesday at 5:45 p.m.
