High School Roundup: Newport Harbor boys’ water polo advances to S&R semifinals

S&R Southern California Tournament

IRVINE — Newport Harbor High advanced to the semifinals after winning two games Friday at the Woollett Aquatic Center.

The Sailors (15-3) will play against Sacred Heart Saturday at 12:p.m., with the winner advancing to the title game at 5:35 p.m. at Woollett.

Newport Harbor opened with an 11-4 win against Acalanes, and beat Miramonte in the quarterfinals, 15-11.

Goal scoring information was not provided.

Goalie Joe Ferraro helped the Sailors to the two wins. He filled in for starter Massimo Navarretta, who has a groin injury.

S&R Southern California Tournament

IRVINE — Corona del Mar High will play in the fifth-place semifinals after splitting its games Friday at Woollett Aquatic Center.

The Sea Kings (7-6) lost to Long Beach Wilson, 12-8, in the quarterfinals.

Jay Neiger led CdM with four goals, Matt Sherburne added three goals and Ashton Jajonie had one goal, while goalie Ryan Hamm made 10 saves.

Neiger also scored four goals to help lead the Sea Kings to a 12-9 win against Coronado to open the tournament. Jajonie scored three goals, while Matt Sherburne and Jack Trush added two goals each. Ryan Greenwald hd one goal and Hamm made 15 saves.

CdM begins play Saturday at 11:05 a.m. at Woollett.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Asics Southern California Challenge

SAN DIEGO — Corona del Mar High won three matches, each in the full three sets, to win its pool Saturday at the tournament hosted by Torrey Pines High.

The Sea Kings beat Goleta Dos Pueblos (25-23, 20-25, 15-10), Fallbrook (25-21, 23-25, 15-7), La Costa Canyon (12-25, 26-24, 15-12).

Katie Craig had six kills and Natalia Bruening had four kills against Dos Pueblos. Craig had 10 kills and Samantha Jones finished with seven kills against Fallbrook. Craig had seven kills and Jessie Harris had eight kills against La Costa Canyon.

CdM continues play in the tournament Saturday.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Corona del Mar 13, Northwood 5

The Sea Kings swept all nine doubles sets in Thursday’s Pacific Coast League match at home, moving into sole possession of second place in league.

Kenzie Purciful and Kimmia Naaseh, Siena Sharf and Jasie Dunk, as well as Erica Chen and Taylor Fogarty, all swept. They improved to a combined 64-18 this season.

Riley Gerdau won twice in singles for CdM (10-2, 4-1 in league), ranked No. 4 in CIF Southern Section Division 1. Shelby Anderson and Elena Fish won one set each.
