College Roundup: UCI’s Thompson wins Vanguard Invitational

Vanguard Invitational

UC Irvine sophomore Isaiah Thompson captured the individual title Saturday morning at Fairview Park in Costa Mesa.

Thompson, last season’s Big West Conference Freshman of the Year, won the 8,000-meter race with a time of 24 minutes, 51 seconds.

UCI’s Nolan Del Valle was 17th overall (fifth in Division I) in 26:09, Jake Williams placed 18th (sixth D-I) in 26:10, Eric Enriquez was 26th (eighth D-I) in 26:29, Blake Wanser 49th (12th D-I) in 27:29 and Julian Lujan 74th (14th D-I) in 28:20.

The ‘Eaters finished second in the team competition with 95 points, 19 behind Loyola Marymount.

MEN’S SOCCER

UC Irvine 2, Sacramento State 0

Mario Ortiz and Trey Hayes scored for the host, No. 11-ranked Anteaters in the Big West Conference game Saturday.

Gerardo Gonzalez and Mitchell Alvarez earned assists on Ortiz’s goal in the 56th minute, while Hayes’ first goal of the season came in the 64th minute, via assists from Noah Gains and Cameron Iwasa.

Michael Breslin made three saves for UCI (10-1-2, 2-1-1 in conference), which took 17 of the game’s 23 shots.

The Hornets are 4-7-2, 2-2.

Vanguard 2, William Jessup 1

ROCKLIN — Jesus Fregoso and Jose Castillo had unassisted goals for the visiting Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference match Saturday.

Vanguard (7-5, 3-2 in conference), had a 12-7 edge in shots and received three saves from Brandon Gomez.

William Jessup is 207-1, 0-5-1.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine def. Cal Poly SLO

The host Anteaters swept the Big West Conference match, 25-23, 25-20, 25-18, on Saturday.

Cassidy Pickrell had 15 kills and hit .375, while Arielle Manz had 11 kills and hit .667 for the winners (12-7, 2-3 in conference).

Shelley Anderson had 38 assists for UCI.

Cal Poly is 7-8, 2-3.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Vanguard 2, William Jessup 1

ROCKLIN — Madison Cody had a goal and an assist for the visiting Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference clash Saturday.

Cody opened the scoring in the 37th minute on an assist from Rayven Hernandez. Cody then set up Liliana Ruiz’s goal in the 57th minute.

Lauren Terry made five saves for the No. 12-ranked Lions (11-1-1, 4-0-1 in conference), who posted a 28-11 edge in shots.

William Jessup is 5-8, 0-6.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

Vanguard Invitational

Lauren Hall led UC Irvine Saturday morning at Fairview Park in Costa Mesa.

She recorded a time of 18:55 over 5,000 meters to finish 23rd overall (third among Division I runners).

Marthie Ponty was 35th (seventh D-I) in 19:14, Pearl Law placed 39th overall (ninth D-I) in 19:18, Hannah Ruby was 39th (10th D-I) in 19:22 and Aliya Shah 52nd (13th D-I) in 19:37.

Kelly Collins from Westmont was the individual champion with a time of 17:39.

In the team competition, UCI was sixth overall (second D-I) with 171 points.

MEN’S WATER POLO

SoCal Tournament

LOS ANGELES — Jared Osborn scored five goals to catapult No. 9 UC Irvine past St. Francis Brooklyn, 15-7, in the SoCal Tournament at Spieker Aquatics Center Saturday afternoon.

Lovre Milos added three goals for the ‘Eaters (11-5) while Ryan Warde and Alan Robertson scored two apiece.

Earlier Saturday, a back-and-forth game that included six ties was decided late in overtime as UCI fell to No. 8. UC San Diego, 8-7.

UCI faces Pepperdine Sunday morning at 10:50 in the consolation bracket at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center on the UCLA campus.
