High School Roundup: CdM advances to semifinals of S&R Sport Tournament

IRVINE — The Corona del Mar High boys’ water polo team won twice Friday at Woollett Aquatics Center to advance to Saturday’s tournament semifinals in the S&R Sport Tournament.

The Sea Kings defeated Davis, 14-9, before getting past Jesuit, 10-8, in a quarterfinal match.

Ashton Jajonie scored three goals against Davis, with Garrett Spruth, Ben Brooks and Jack Trush each scoring twice. Nigel Bress made 13 saves.

Trush had three goals against Jesuit, with Spruth, Brendan Hack and Foster Hoose each scoring twice. Bress made nine saves.

CdM (10-2) plays Foothill in a tournament semifinal at 2:40 p.m. Saturday at Woollett. The champonship match is at 8:05 p.m.

FOOTBALL

St. Margaret’s 44, Sage Hill 6

Senior quarterback CJ McCord threw for 138 yards for the host Lightning in the Academy League opener on Friday night.

Sage, which has never beaten The Tartans, fell to 3-4, 0-1 in league.

St. Margaret’s, ranked No. 1 in the CIF Southern Section East Valley Division, improved to 6-0, 1-0.

McCord and senior running back Beau Roth each had 33 rushing yards for the Lightning, for whom senior Zach Burns had four receptions for 35 yards.

Senior Vince Wetmore had three catches for 47 yards and junior Jake Fisher caught three passes for 24 yards.

BOYS’ CROSS COUNTRY

Pacific Coast League Cluster Meet

IRVINE — Parker Nostrand won to lead Corona del Mar High to a first-place finish Thursday.

Nostrand finished in 15 minutes, 39 seconds.

CdM won with 36 points, followed by Northwood (41), Woodbridge (51), Irvine (122), Beckman (129) and University (137).

Matt Paragas was in third in 15:48 and Leif Hellgren was fourth in 15:55 for CdM, while Thomas Robertson took eighth in 16:08 and Kellen Givens was 20th in 16:52.

GIRLS’ CROSS COUNTRY

Pacific Coast League Cluster Meet

IRVINE — Kirsten Hansen won the meet in 18:19 and led Corona del Mar to a first-place finish Thursday.

CdM won with 33 points, followed by Northwood (47), Woodbridge (60), University (121), Irvine (138) and Beckman (141).

Raquel Powers was in second in 18:24 for CdM, Jacqueline Choe came in eighth in 18:43, Elin Wolker was ninth in 18:47 and Hannah Crane finished 13th in 19:11.

GIRLS’ GOLF

Huntington Beach 223, Newport Harbor 232

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Grace Ferrell earned medalist honors for the Sailors after shooting 39 in the Sunset League match at SeaCliff Country Club Thursday.

Madison Fernandez (44), Tehya Corona (47), Teanna Herrera (49) and Jackie Defeo (53) also scored for Newport Harbor (10-4, 5-3 in league).
