High School Roundup: Sailors fall in five to HB

Share

The Newport Harbor High girls’ volleyball team saw a would-be great comeback go for naught in the fourth set against Huntington Beach.

The Sailors then saw the Oilers pull off a courageous rally in the fifth set to grab a 19-25, 25-22, 22-25, 26-24, 16-14 Sunset League win.

That’s how a lot of these matches go in the Sunset League. HB won its second straight match in the fifth set and improved to 13-5, 3-0 in league.

Newport Harbor Coach Dan Glenn, whose team fell to 8-7, 2-1, and Oilers Coach Craig Pazanti both said it will take about eight wins to capture the league title.

Glenn and the Sailors will feel regret when thinking about this match, as Newport Harbor held a 13-11 lead before the Oilers came back.

Junior Hannah Russell came up with two clutch kills in the middle to end it.

“Very balanced,” Pazanti said of the Sunset League. “I don’t know if we have the best teams in the county but I think we have four very good teams. You have to come play every night. There’s no break. It’s going to prepare all the teams for the playoffs.”

Glenn said he was proud of the way his team showed fight in the fourth set, when the Sailors trailed, 20-14, and later survived six set points before HB ended it after two NHHS errors.

Remy Wilson led Newport Harbor with 31 kills to go with two aces. Gabby Shelly and Jaclyn Brown added 16 kills each for the Sailors. Setter Ellie Hagadorn and Sami Yeager both had standout performances with 67 assists and 24 digs, respectively. Logan Grove and Katie Duhoux had 11 kills each.

Cami Sanchez led the Oilers with 28 kills. Ashley Stevens had 21 digs and Rachel Hall amassed 52 assists for HB.
