High School Roundup: Newport Harbor takes down Mater Dei in girls’ tennis

Newport Harbor 13, Mater Dei 5

Anna Burke and Kendall Cosenza swept at No. 1 doubles for the Sailors in Wednesday’s nonleague match at home.

Taryn Anderson and Eva Newsom won two of three doubles sets for Newport Harbor (11-1), and Lily Walkow won twice in singles.

The Sailors, ranked No. 9 in CIF Southern Section Division 1, resume Sunset League play Thursday, when they host Edison.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Newport Harbor 12, Fountain Valley 6

Junior Connor Turnbow-Lindenstadt had five goals, two assists and two steals as the Sailors won their Sunset League opener Wednesday at Newport Harbor High.

Gavin Kunkle, Nic Rimlinger and Jackson Westerman scored twice for the Sailors, while Jason Grew, John Rankin and Ben Morrison also had two steals. Joe Ferraro had six goalie saves, and Ryan Taylor made four.

The game was Turnbow-Lindenstadt’s first with Newport Harbor after transferring from CdM.

Newport Harbor, ranked No. 9 in CIF Southern Section Division 1, improved to 7-8 overall.

Estancia 15, Saddleback 7

Kyle Fitzgerald scored eight goals for the Eagles in their Orange Coast League opener on Wednesday.

Jason Chesemore and Chris DeFrenza each scored twice for Estancia (5-10, 1-0 in league), and goalie Eizik Leyva made 13 saves.

Estancia plays host to Bolsa Grande on Friday.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Corona del Mar def. Beckman

Senior Jessie Harris led the Sea Kings with 17 kills during a 25-18, 25-19, 25-22 Pacific Coast League sweep at home on Wednesday.

Kendall Kipp contributed seven kills, while Payton Carter finished with 15 digs for CdM (12-1, 2-0 in league), ranked No. 4 in the CIF Southern Section Division 1AA poll.

The Sea Kings play at University Thursday at 5:15 p.m.

GIRLS’ GOLF

Huntington Beach 226, Newport Harbor 235

Grace Ferrell shot three-over-par 39 and was co-medalist for the Sailors in the Sunset League match at Santa Ana Country Club on Wednesday.

Tehya Corona (41), Teanna Herrera (51), Nicole Nesbitt (51) and Madison Hernandez (53) also scored for Newport Harbor (5-6, 3-4 in league).
