SAN LUIS OBISPO — Mario Ortiz converted an assist from Michael Sperber in the 76th minute for the visiting No. 3-ranked Anteaters to erase a 1-0 deficit in the Big West Conference opener on Thursday.

Matt LaGrassa put the Mustangs ahead in the 43rd minute.

Two overtime periods were scoreless.

Michael Breslin had six saves for UCI (8-0-2), which visits UC Santa Barbara on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Cal Poly is 5-2-3.

CYPRESS — Carina Perez recorded 41 digs for the Pirates in their Orange Empire Conference opener that they won, 25-19, 27-25, 22-25, 27-25, Friday night.

Sierra Brown led with 17 kills, while Danyelle Brown and Lehua Alama-Jordan had 14 kills each and Danielle Boyette amassed 52 assists for OCC (7-0, 1-0 in conference).

Cypress is 9-1, 0-1.
