Two-Minute Drill: Sammy Swanson writes about Costa Mesa’s win

Share

Sammy Swanson penned a first-person story at OCSidelines.com, calling Costa Mesa High’s 15-6 nonleague win against Savanna at Glover Stadium a confusing one.

Swanson, who played for the first time since suffering a concussion in a 40-21 loss to Katella on Sept. 10, said in the story that Costa Mesa performed mediocre on offense, while the defense turned in a dominant showing.

With Swanson’s brother, Ben, not playing quarterback because of an injury, Cameron Curet stepped in at quarterback. He ran more than he passed, rushing 17 times for 50 yards and a touchdown, while completing two of eight passes for 21 yards.

Swanson, a senior center, had a couple of bad snaps to Curet, who was in shotgun. One of the snaps went over Curet’s head late in the third quarter, with the Mustangs ahead, 8-6. Curet picked up the ball and Savanna dropped him for a 31-yard loss, putting Costa Mesa in a fourth-and-40 situation on its 39.

The defense forced two turnovers, Swanson, a linebacker, stripped the running back in the third quarter, and Curet, a linebacker, picked off a pass late in the game.

Savanna also turned the ball over on downs four times.

•Costa Mesa continued its strong start under its first-year coach, Glen Fisher, marking the sixth time in the program’s history the Mustangs have begun the year with a 4-1 record.

The Mustangs’ last 4-1 start was in 2011.

Costa Mesa, ranked No. 9 in the CIF Southern Section Southern Division poll, has a bye this week before opening Orange Coast League play at Laguna Beach on Oct. 9. The Mustangs have kicked off league with wins in each of the past two years.

•Curet produced all of the Mustangs’ 15 points, returning a punt 44 yards for a touchdown, running in a two-point conversion, rushing for a four-yard touchdown and converting an extra-point kick.

Curet, a senior, was the quarterback, linebacker, kicker, punter and returner for the Mustangs.
