Briefs: UCI’s Martin honored

UC Irvine sophomore Riley Martin has been named Big West Athlete of the Week in men’s cross country for the second time in as many meets this season.

Martin finished second in the Mustang Challenge Division I Invite on Saturday. He covered the 8,000-meter course at Central Park in Santa Clarita in 24 minutes, 56.20 seconds to help the Anteaters finish third.

Martin also won the Big West award following the season-opening UCI Invitational, in which he placed second among 102 runners.

UCI is back in action Oct. 4 in the NCAA Preview meet at Haggin Oaks Golf Club in Sacramento.

UCI’s Holcomb lauded

UC Irvine junior Kaycee Holcomb has claimed her second Big West Conference Athlete of the Week award in women’s cross country this season.

Holcomb completed the 5,000-meter course in 18 minutes, 7.20 seconds Saturday to finish fifth in the Mustang Challenge Division I Invite at Central Park in Santa Clarita as the Anteaters placed third in the team competition.

Holcomb also earned the Big West’s weekly honor following the season-opening UCI Invitational on Sept. 7 when she finished sixth among 134 runners.

The Anteaters compete in the NCAA Preview meet at Sacramento’s Haggin Oaks Golf Club Oct. 4.
