FIELD HOCKEY

Newport Harbor 6, Fountain Valley 1

FOUNTAIN VALLEY — The Sailors trailed, 1-0, in the first eight minutes, but responded with six unanswered goals for the Sunset League win at Fountain Valley High.

Jordan Blanchfield had one goal and two assists. Alex Palmer had two assists.

Daniela Vazquez, Cameron Dewan, Riley Flanagan, Elizabeth Muenchow and Sophie Templin scored one goal each, while Emily Contant and Caroline Gels had one assist each for Newport Harbor (11-2, 2-0 in league).

Goalie Erika Nilsson had two saves in the second half.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Corona del Mar 17, Irvine 1

Shelby Anderson and Elena Fish combined to earn a “triple bagel” in the Sea Kings’ Pacific Coast League opener on Thursday at home.

Anderson and Fish won, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Seniors Lily Goddard and Karina Ryabokonova won three out of four sets at Nos. 2 and 3 singles.

In doubles, seniors Gigi Gill and Robin Caston, as well as Kimmia Naaseh and Ashley Kayl, each won twice, as did senior Jamie Adamson and sophomore Paige Kenerson.

CdM (6-1), ranked No. 4 in CIF Southern Section Division 1, plays at Woodbridge on Tuesday.

Los Alamitos 14, Newport Harbor 4

LOS ALAMITOS — Senior Kate Knight won twice in singles for the Sailors in their Sunset League opener Thursday at Los Alamitos High.

Sophomores Kendall Cosenza and Anna Burke also won twice at No. 1 doubles for Newport Harbor (6-7) against Los Al, the defending league champion. Prior to last year, Newport Harbor had won four straight league titles.

Newport Harbor Coach Kristen Case said her team lost four 6-4 sets, a 7-5 set and a 7-6 set. She said her players are excited to play Los Al again in the second round of league, which will be Oct. 15 at home.

The Sailors play host to Marina on Tuesday.

Laguna Beach 12, Estancia 6

LAGUNA BEACH — Slade Garnett swept at No. 2 singles for the Eagles in Thursday’s Orange Coast League match on the road.

Kinley Ohland won twice at No. 1 singles for Estancia (4-5, 1-1), which plays host to Godinez on Tuesday.

GIRLS’ GOLF

Corona del Mar 200, Northwood 210

CdM sophomore Amy Matsuoka was medalist, carding a one-over-par 36 in the Pacific Coast League match Thursday at Costa Mesa Country Club’s Mesa Linda course.

Alyaa Abdulghany and Karlie Moses both shot 40 for the Sea Kings (6-1, 3-1 in league). Gabby Finear and Kelley King both shot 42.

CdM plays in the Long Beach Wilson tournament Monday morning at Recreation Park Golf Course.

Los Alamitos 234, Newport Harbor 245

Sophomore Grace Ferrell earned medalist honors for the sixth straight time, shooting a two-over-par 38 during the Sailors’ Sunset League match at Big Canyon Country Club on Thursday.

Coach Scott Tarnow said Ferrell is the first Newport Harbor (5-5, 1-3 in league) golfer to win medalist honors six straight times during his 14 years with the program.

Tehya Corona shot a 46, followed by Christina Ferraro (52), Teanna Herrera (54) and Madison Fernandez (55).

BOYS’ WATER POLO

South Coast Tournament

Corona del Mar High opened the tournament by winning twice at its home pool Thursday. The Sea Kings topped Capistrano Valley, 16-9, before getting past Huntington Beach, 8-5.

Senior Jay Neiger scored five goals int he opener, and senior Matt Sherburne and junior Jack Trush each scored twice. Senior Ryan Hamm (seven saves) and junior Nigel Bress (four) shared time in goal.

Neiger again led CdM (2-2) with four goals against Huntington Beach. Sherburne had two, while senior Charlie Rodosky and junior Ashton Jajonie scored single goals. Hamm made eight saves.

The Sea Kings, ranked No. 7 in CIF Southern Section Division 1, play against No. 5 Dana Hills in a tournament quarterfinal Friday at 5 p.m. at CdM.
