High School Roundup: Costa Mesa’s Bermudez wins OCL Cluster Meet

Orange Coast League Cluster Meet

Costa Mesa High senior Brett Bermudez won in 15 minutes, 24.40 seconds to lead the Mustangs to a third-place finish Wednesday at Irvine Park in Orange.

Junior Anuare Magana came in third for Costa Mesa in 15:38.86. John Hernandez (13th in 16:56.45), Joseph Pena (21st in 17:34.53) and Christian Chavez (26th in 18:02.11) rounded out the Mustangs’ top five. Costa Mesa scored 64 points. Laguna Beach won with 42 points and Godinez was second with 51 points.

Estancia finished sixth out of six schools with 169 points, led by Justin Pearson (29th in 18:59.50) and Alberto Espindola (19:05.26).

Sunset League Preview Meet

Newport Harbor went 0-5 Wednesday at Central Park in Huntington Beach.

The Sailors lost to Fountain Valley, 15-48, Edison, 16-45, Huntington Beach, 18-43, Los Alamitos, 21-38, and Marina, 18-39.

Marcel DeBarros led Newport Harbor, finishing 17th in 16 minutes, 48 seconds on the three-mile course. He ran the final two miles with one shoe, as he lost a shoe after the first mile, Sailors Coach Nowell Kay said.

Conner DiPaolo (25th in 17:04), Brian Shaw (38th in 17:42), Jon Candias (39th in 17:43) and Christian Garcia (44th in 18:27) rounded out Newport Harbor’s top five.

GIRLS’ CROSS COUNTRY

Sunset League Preview Meet

Newport Harbor went 2-3, beating Los Alamitos and Huntington Beach Wednesday at Central Park in Huntington Beach.

The Sailors lost to Edison, 21-34, Fountain Valley, 22-33, and Marina, 25-32.

Lauren Loucks helped Newport Harbor beat Los Al based on being a better sixth runner after a 29-29 tie. The Sailors beat the Oilers, 20-43.

Erin Barth (12th in 19 minutes, 19 seconds) led Newport Harbor, while Kaitlyn Mead (17th in 19:42), Ashley Ima (18th in 19:43), Grace Clemence (20th in 19:51), Leah Van Dyke (21st in 19:56), Loucks (24th in 20:08) and Holly Clemence (29th in 20:26) also competed.

Orange Coast League Cluster Meet

Senior Daysi Vazquez finished eighth in 19:30.81 to lead Costa Mesa High to a third-place finish Wednesday at Irvine Park in Orange.

Costa Mesa scored 76 points. Laguna Beach came in first with 25 points and Godinez was second with 34 points.

Emily Olvera (13th in 20:17.25), Holly Reiland (14th in 20:17.92), Gabriela Perez (15th in 20:20.98) and Jocelyn Gutierrez (26th in 21:57.03) rounded out the Mustangs’ top five.

Estancia was fifth out of six schools with 136 points, led by sophomore Gabby Pearson (22nd in 20:59.60). Viri Rios (24th in 21:27.64), Jacqui Puentes (27th in 22:02.76), Maria Gonzalez (30th in 22:33.24) and Yaritza Sandoval (33rd in 24:14.14) were a part of the Eagles’ top five.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Garden Grove 14, Estancia 5

Chris DeFrenza and Eli Sperling scored two goals each for the Eagles in the nonleague game Wednesday.

Aaron Will added one goal and goalie Cesar Coto made 12 saves for Estancia (1-4).
