High School Roundup: Sage Hill sweeps Oxford Academy

Sage Hill def. Oxford Academy

CERRITOS — Senior outside hitter Halland McKenna finished with 13 kills and three service aces in an Academy League opener that the Lightning won, 25-5, 25-21, 25-18, on Tuesday.

Kekai Whitford had 11 kills and three aces for Sage Hill (6-3), ranked No. 1 in the CIF Southern Section Division 3AA poll.

Emily Lassiter added four kills and an ace.

Sage Hill plays host to Downey Calvary Chapel on Thursday at 5:15 p.m.

Newport Harbor def. Orange Lutheran

Gabby Shelly had 17 kills to help lead the Sailors to a 21-25, 25-15, 28-26, 25-13 nonleague home win Tuesday.

Ellie Hagadorn had 29 assists and Sammie Yeager had 23 digs for Newport Harbor (4-4), which opens Sunset League play at Los Alamitos Oct. 1.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Sage Hill 14, Whitney 4

Junior Celine Wang, playing No. 2 singles, won two sets for the Lightning during an Academy League opener at The Tennis Club in Newport Beach on Tuesday.

Marina Anderson and Isabella Deckey won two sets in No. 1 doubles action for Sage Hill (4-3), ranked No. 6 in the CIF Southern Section Division 2 poll.

Newport Harbor 13, Sage Hill 5

Nicole Knickerbocker swept at No. 2 singles for the Sailors, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1, in the nonleague match at Newport Harbor on Monday.

No. 1 doubles Anna Burke and Kendall Cosenza swept at No. 1 doubles for Newport Harbor, 6-2, 6-2, 7-5, and Annie LeGrandeur and Livi Zehnder swept at No. 2 doubles 6-2, 6-1, 7-6 (5).

The Sailors (4-3) open Sunset League play Thursday at Los Alamitos.

Calvary Chapel 14, Estancia 4

The No. 3 doubles team of Maile and Sarah Mack earned a tight win for Estancia in an Orange Coast League opener Tuesday at Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

The Macks beat Calvary Chapel’s No. 3 doubles team, 7-6 (3).

Estancia (3-5, 0-1 in league) plays at Saddleback on Thursday.

BOYS’ CROSS COUNTRY

Academy League meet

IRVINE — Senior Patrick Hynes finished fifth on the three-mile course in 16 minutes, 28 seconds at Mason Park to help the Lightning finish third out of seven teams Tuesday.

St. Margaret’s was first with 36 points and Crean Lutheran (46) was third.

Senior Brian Slaughter was 10th in 17:18, senior Alexis Michaca was 11th in 17:25, junior Calvin Shimano was 18th in 17:56 and junior Cameron Knollenberg was 19th in 18:05.

Sage Hill next competes in the Brentwood Invitational on Saturday.

GIRLS’ CROSS COUNTRY

Academy League meet

IRVINE — Senior Brittany Andressoo finished third on the three-mile course in 19:35 at Mason Park to help the Lightning finish third Wednesday.

St. Margaret’s won the meet with 45 points and Crean Lutheran (46) was second.

Sophomore Julia Lowe was fourth in 19:35, sophomore Julia Dupuis was 16th in 22:04, senior Rebecca Fudge was 17th in 22:05 and senior Claire Goul was 29th in 22:54.

Woodbridge Invitational

Junior Emily Bacon finished third on the three-mile course at the Great Park in 17 minutes, 49 seconds on Saturday.

Senior Erin Barth was fourth in 17:52, junior Emma Buggeln was ninth in 18:01, junior Holly Clemence was 45th in 19:17, sophomore Lani Kerrigan was 104th in 20:58, senior Maria Gomez was 116th in 21:20 and junior Kendal Marking was 123rd in 21:44. Sophomore Emily Molstad won the novice race in 22:30.

Newport Harbor next competes in the Sunset League Preview Meet Wednesday at Central Park in Huntington Beach.

GIRLS’ GOLF

Newport Harbor 214, Huntington Beach 228

Grace Ferrell shot one-under-par 34 to earn medalist honors for the Sailors at Costa Mesa Country Club’s Mesa Linda course Wednesday.

Madison Fernandez (43), Tehya Corona (43), Teanna Herrera (46) and Hannah Knapp (48) also scored for Newport Harbor (8-1, 3-0 in league).

Ferrell shot six under 64 to earn medalist honors Monday in a three-way match with Estancia and Millikan at Mesa Linda. She leads Orange County with seven medalist finishes, Newport Harbor Coach Scott Tarnow said.

Newport Harbor won with 410 against Millikan (498) and Estancia (540). Corona (78), Fernandez (82), Herrera (91) and Chandler Elmore (95) also scored for the Sailors.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Long Beach Wilson 17, Corona del Mar 13

LONG BEACH — Brendan Hack and Jack Trush scored four goals for the Sea Kings in the nonleague game Tuesday.

Aston Jajonie and Patrick Ong added two goals each. Trush, Garrett Spruce and Nigel Bress had two assists each. Jajonie and Ong had two steals each and Bress made 10 saves.

CdM (1-1) is ranked No. 5 in CIF Southern Section Division 1 and Wilson is ranked No. 6 in Division 1.
