High School Roundup: Sage Hill beats JSerra for first time since 2008

NEWPORT COAST — Junior outside hitter Kekai Whitford had 25 kills, 23 digs and two aces to help lead the Lightning to 25-19, 28-26, 26-28, 25-15 nonleague win Thursday.

It was the first time Sage Hill (10-4) beat JSerra since 2008, Coach Dan Thomassen said.

Junior setter Maddy Abbott had 51 assists and six aces, four coming in the final set, while junior outside hitter Halland McKenna had 20 kills and 18 digs for the Lightning, ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division 3-A.

Sage Hill plays at Calvary Chapel Downey to open Academy League paly Tuesday at 5 p.m.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Newport Harbor 10, St. Margaret’s 8

NEWPORT BEACH — Anna Burke and Kendall Cosenza swept at No. 1 doubles, 7-5, 6-3, 6-1, for the Sailors in the nonleague match Thursday.

Annie LaGrandeur and Reagan Rutter won two of three at No. 2 doubles, as did Kate Knight at No. 1 singles for Newport Harbor (6-4), which plays host to Mater Dei Friday.

Corona del Mar 15, Laguna Beach 3

LAGUNA BEACH — Kenzie Purcifull and Kimmia Naaseh won twice at No. 1 singles and remained undefeated at 13-0 for the Sea Kings in the nonleague match Thursday.

The CdM doubles teams of Siena Sharf/Jasie Dunk (6-0, 6-0, 6-2) and Sofia Chen/Taylor Fogarty (6-1, 6-0) scored five wins, while seniors Robin Caston and Gigi Gill substitued in and defeated Laguna Beach’s #1 doubles team, 6-2.

The Sea Kings (5-0), ranked No. 4 in CIF Southern Section Division 1, play host to Peninsula Wednesday.

Magnolia 9, Estancia 9 (81-78, Magnolia wins on games)

ANAHEIM — The Eagles’ No. 3 singles player Doris Corona won twice, including a 6-4 win against Magnolia’s No. 2 player, 6-4, to force the tie in the nonleague match Thursday.

Estancia (3-4) plays host to Costa Mesa to open Orange Coast League play Tuesday at 3 p.m.

GIRLS’ GOLF

Corona del Mar 208, Woodbridge 228

IRVINE — Alyaa Abdulghany shot one-over-par 37 to finish as the medalist for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League match at Rancho San Joaquin Golf Course Thursday.

Amy Matsuoka (38), Karlie Moses (40), Gabby Finear (44) and Hanna Hogan (49) also scored for CdM (6-0, 3-0 in league), which plays against University Monday at Strawberry Farms Golf Course.

Edison 224, Newport Harbor 258

NEWPORT BEACH — The Sailors’ Grace Ferrell shot two-over-par 38 to earn medalist honors for the third straight match in nonleague action Thursday at Big Canyon Country Club.

Tehya Corona (53), Christina Ferraro (54), Sabrina Weiler (56) and Madison Fernandez (57) also scored for Newport Harbor (1-4, 0-2 in league).
