College Roundup: UCI’s Wise scores career-high eight goals

UC Irvine 16, Chapman 6

ORANGE — Senior All-American Mitch Wise scored a career-high eight goals for the Anteaters in the nonconference game Wednesday at Allred Aquatics Center in Orange.

Tyler Mancuso added four goals as UCI (9-0) picked up its ninth consecutive victory to open the season. UCI moved up to No. 7 in the Collegiate Water Polo Association poll earlier Wednesday.

Alex Kazmier played in the first half in goal and recorded five saves while Michael Bailey had six stops in the second half for the ‘Eaters.

UCI competes in the NorCal Tournament this weekend, opening against Pepperdine Saturday at 9:25 a.m. at Diablo Valley College.

Orange Coast 12, Fullerton 9 (OT)

COSTA MESA — Tony Morelli and Dillon Avila scored three goals each for the Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference opener for both teams Wednesday.

Corona del Mar High product Colby Watson scored off a pass from Scott Brush with just over two minutes left in regulation to make it, 9-9, and force overtime.

Goalkeeper Luis Martinez made seven saves including two from point-blank range in overtime for OCC (3-0, 1-0 in conference). Josiah Vander Kooy had five saves and a pair of assists for the Pirates in the first half.

OCC will return to OEC action on Wednesday at Saddleback at 4 p.m.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

Orange Coast 12, Fullerton 6

COSTA MESA — Katelyn Hansen scored three goals for the Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game Wednesday.

Kellie Thorsness added two goals and Laruen Babb tallied one, and goalie Lindsey Richardson had eight saves for OCC, which plays at Saddleback Wednesday at 3 p.m.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

USC def. UC Irvine

LOS ANGELES — Arielle Manz had eight kills for the Anteaters, who were unable to top fifth-ranked USC in a nonconference match Wednesday.

The Trojans (9-1) won 25-18, 25-15, 25-19.

UCI is 7-4.
