College Roundup: OCC women’s volleyball sweeps Rio Hondo

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Orange Coast def. Rio Hondo

WHITTIER — Estancia High alumna Lehua Alma-Jordan had nine kills as the Pirates swept their nonconference season opener, 25-12, 25-18, 25-22, on Wednesday at Rio Hondo College.

Danyelle Brown added seven kills for the Pirates, Danielle Boyette dished out 23 assists and Carina Perez tallied 14 digs.

Rio Hondo fell to 0-9.

Orange Coast plays host to Southwestern at 5 p.m. Friday.

Menlo def. Vanguard

Jessica Neves recorded 17 kills for the Lions, but Menlo won, 25-19, 25-23, 16-25, 23-25, 15-13, Wednesday.

Jessica Chase had 13 kills and 20 digs and Sarah McKinny added 10 kills. Amanda Sappington led Vanguard with 24 digs. Kiana Nicio had 16 digs and Kelly Dalrymple had 12 digs. Lauren Hays had 37 assists, four kills and 19 digs.

MEN’S WATER POLO

Orange Coast 21, Santa Ana 7

Freshman Jake Davis had five goals to help the host Pirates open Orange Empire Conference play in strong fashion on Wednesday.

Maath Brodsky (six saves) and Luis Martinez (five) each played two periods in goal for the Pirates (1-3).

Santa Ana fell to 3-4.

OCC returns to action at the Mt. SAC tournament that begins Friday.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

Orange Coast 16, Santa Ana 1

Sophomores Katelyn Hansen and Lauren Babb paced the host Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference opener for both teams Wednesday.

Hansen had four goals, while Babb excelled on defense for OCC ( 4-1).

OCC received goals from 11 players, including two each from Babb and Harley Owens.

OCC competes in the Mt. SAC tournament beginning Friday.
