Former UC Irvine men’s volleyball All-American Kevin Tillie helped France win Pool E and advance to the third round of the Federation Internationale de Volleyball World Championships in Poland.

Tillie, who helped UCI claim back-to-back NCAA titles in 2012 and 2013, had eight kills Monday in France’s 25-15, 26-24, 25-22 victory over Germany to open play in third round.

France, coached by Tillie’s father, Laurent Tillie, will play Iran on Thursday.

The United States, including former UCI All-Americans David Smith and Carson Clark and coached by former UCI men’s head man John Speraw, finished fourth in Pool E and were eliminated.

Team USA, for whom Estancia High product Matt Fuerbringer is an assistant coach, went 6-4 at the World Championships. It saw a four-match winning streak halted by Argentina on Sunday, which proved to be a disappointing ending to its World Championships run in Poland.

Smith, a reserve middle blocker, had one ace in against Argentina.
