High School Roundup: Mesa’s Magana wins race at Laguna Hills Invitational

LAGUNA HILLS — Costa Mesa’s Anuare Magana won the Division 3 senior race in 15 minutes 45 seconds, which ranked as the eighth fastest time overall on Saturday.

Corona del Mar’s Parker Nostrand finished second, 10 seconds behind Magana. Nostrand’s time of 15:55 was good enough to share 14th place.

Newport Harbor’s Conner Di Paolo placed seventh in the Division 2 senior race in 16:09, sharing the 24th overall fastest time.

Corona del Mar’s Matt Paragas was the fifth junior in Division 3 at 16:28, while Thomas Robertson was seventh (16:48). Leif Hellgren placed third (16:51) in Division 3 for sophomores and Zowie Hillebrandt 14th (17:47).

Costa Mesa’s Andres Avelar was 13th (16:51) in the Division 3 senior event, John Hernandez was 33rd (17:51) and Jayson Baker 45th (18:28).

In Division 3, Costa Mesa’s Elliot Hachac was 35th (18:28) for sophomores, Joseph Pena 37th (18:35) and Sebastian Chavez 43rd (18:50).

Newport Harbor’s Sean Arnold and Erik Herrera finished 23rd (17:37) and 47th (18:29), respectively, in the Division 2 junior event. Anthony Agama was 40th (17:59) amongst Division 2 sophomores.

GIRLS’ CROSS COUNTRY

Laguna Hills Invitational

LAGUNA HILLS — Kirsten Hansen helped Corona del Mar finish fifth overall as a team by finishing with a time of 18 minutes 56 seconds, the ninth fastest mark on Saturday.

Hansen placed second in the Division 3 senior race. Runners competed by class in their respective divisions.

Corona del Mar’s Raquel Powers was third (19:23) in the sophomore event, while Tess St. Geme was fourth (19:39) in the senior race. Jacqueline Choe and Hannah Crane finished fifth (19:45) and ninth (20:20), respectively, amongst juniors.

Emily Bacon highlights one of four runners for Newport Harbor, which placed 15th overall. Bacon finished second in the Division 2 junior race in 19:03, good for 14th overall.

Juniors Emma Buggeln and Holly Clemence placed fourth (19:34) and seventh (20:15), respectively, in Division 2.

Newport Harbor’s Erin Barth was fifth (19:36) in the senior race.

In Division 3, Costa Mesa’s Gabriela Perez placed 16th (21:06) and Catherine Pimentel 32nd (22:32) for juniors, while Tania Jaramillo was 33rd (23:02) for seniors.

Costa Mesa’s Emily Olvera finished 16th (21:12) for sophomores.

Estancia’s Stephanie Martinez was 41st (23:44) for seniors.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Segerstrom Tournament

Estancia High split its two games in conoslation action, beating Burroughs, 11-4, and losing to San Juan Hills, 10-4, Saturday.

Jason Chesemore scored four goals in the win and led with two goals in the loss. Cody Nelson added three goals and Eli Sperling scored two in the win for the Eagles (2-3).

John Leal made 17 saves for the day.

Estancia plays host to Lakeside on Tuesday.
