Briefs: UCI’s Bjurman honored

UC Irvine junior midfielder Mats Bjurman has been named Big West Conference Defensive Player of the Week in men’s soccer.

Bjurman helped the then No. 17-ranked Anteaters earn a pair of 2-1 wins over then No. 19-ranked Denver (Friday) and No. 25-ranked Clemson (Sunday).

Bjurman also contributed offensively, notching his first game-winning goal against Denver.

UCI (3-0) are unbeaten against the last eight ranked teams in regular-season competition.

UCI’s Milos shines

UC Irvine sophomore Lovre Milos has been named the first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Week in men’s water polo.

A transfer from UCLA, the driver produced 23 goals in four wins at the Triton Invitational last weekend. He scored five goals in his first game, an 11-6 win over Loyola Marymount. He followed with eight goals against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, three against UC Davis and seven against La Verne.

Tebbe singled out

UC Irvine senior Alex Tebbe has been named Big West Conference Athlete of the Week in men’s cross country following his performance in the UCI Invitational.

Tebbe placed second among 108 runners with a time of 25 minutes, 40.8 seconds over the 8,000-meter course at the Anteater Recreation Center Fields on Saturday.

UCI, with three runners in the top nine spots, finished second as a team.

The ‘Eaters return to action in the Mustang Challenge at Central Park in Santa Clarita on Sept. 20.

UCI’s Holcomb lauded

UC Irvine senior Kaycee Holcomb has been named Big West Conference Athlete of the Week for women’s cross country.

Holcomb placed 12th among 157 runners by completing the 5,000-meter course in 19 minutes, 2 seconds at the UCI Invitational on Saturday at the Anteater Recreation Center Fields.

Her performance helped UCI finish third as a team.

Holcomb earned the Big West weekly honor twice last season.

UCI is back in action Sept. 20 in the Mustang Challenge at Central Park in Santa Clarita.

Parada with Mexico

UC Irvine alumnus Adam Parada is competing for Mexico in the FIBA Basketball World Cup being conducted in Spain.

Parada, a 7-foot center, had five points, four rebounds and two blocked shots in 23 minutes of Wednesday’s 70-62 loss to Australia in Group D play in Gran Canaria.

He had a pair of blocked shots in Tuesday’s 79-55 victory over Angola.

Parada, who competed for the Anteaters from 2000-04, was a member of UCI’s first Big West Conference regular-season championship teams in 2001 and 2002.

He ranks No. 4 in school history with 775 rebounds and is eighth in career scoring (1,320). He is one of just five players in the Anteater record book to record at least 1,000 points and 700 rebounds in his career.

Parada was a second-team All-Big West Conference performer in 2002 and 2003.

As a senior, he led the ‘Eaters in scoring (12.3) and rebounding (6.6).

Parada led UCI in rebounding each of his four seasons, the only Anteater player to accomplish that feat.

He ranks second in UCI annals with 149 career blocked shots.
