College Roundup: UCI women’s soccer edges San Diego

WOMEN’S SOCCER

UC Irvine 2, San Diego 1

Laura McGrail converted an assist from Clarissa Robles in the 63rd minute to break a 1-1 tie and lift the host Anteaters to their third straight victory on Friday night at the Anteater Recreation Center.

Robles had the assist in the first UCI goal by Kiana Palacios that opened the scoring in the 11th minute.

But the Toreros knotted things in the 22nd minute.

Both teams had nine shots, but UCI’s six shots on goal were three times more than the visitors put on frame. USD (1-4-2) did have 10 corner kicks, to only two for the ‘Eaters (3-4).

UCI plays host to USC on Sunday at 6 p.m. at the ARC.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine def. Bethune-Cookman

ALBUQUERQUE — Sophomore Victoria Dennis had a career-high 17 kills to lead the Anteaters to a 25-17, 25-14, 25-16 victory in the New Mexico tournament on Friday at the University of New Mexico.

Dennis hit .406, while Arielle Manz hit .400 and added eight kills for UCI (5-3), which received 37 assists from Emily Blair and a team-best 14 digs from Allison Lee.

Bethune-Cookman is 0-8.

UCI continues tournament play Saturday, when it faces Montana State at 9:30 a.m. (PT) and the host Lobos at 6:30 p.m.

MEN’S SOCCER

Vanguard 5, Soka 1

ALISO VIEJO — Sophomore Juan Arellano had two goals and an assist to lead the visiting Lions in the nonleague contest Thursday night.

Kelvin Fares, Luis Valdavia and Samer Mahmood also scored for Vanguard (4-1).

Luke Kadillak had two assists, while Brian Pautasso, Edgar Hernandez and Travis Walser had one apiece for the winners.

Soka fell to 4-2.

Vanguard plays at home Saturday against Bethesda at 4 p.m.
