PASADENA — The Lightning got shut out and fell to 1-2 after losing the nonleague game Friday.

Quarterback Caden Sheetz threw for 99 yards, completing 12 of his 27 pass attempts. Jacob Copeland led the Sage Hill receivers with 49 yards on four catches.

The Lightning were held to three yards rushing.

Maranatha built a 24-0 lead in the first half.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Dave Mohs Tournament

Corona del Mar High won twice to improve to 4-0 on Friday.

Jessie Harris led the Sea Kings with eight kills in their 25-20, 25-22 win over Bakersfield Centennial. Natalia Bruening added seven kills and Payton Carter had three aces.

Bruening had nine kills and Ashley Humphreys added seven kills in CdM’s 25-11, 25-16, win over Goleta Dos Pueblos.

Sage Hill School opened the season with losses to Woodbridge and Santiago at Corona del Mar High Friday.

Jamie Dailey recorded nine kills for Sage Hill (0-2) against Woodbridge, which won 25-19,14-25, 15-13.

Emily Lassiter led the Lightning with four kills against Santiago, which won, 25-11, 25-13.

Sage Hill plays against Orange Lutheran Saturday at 8 a.m. at CdM.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Yorba Linda 8, Costa Mesa 4

YORBA LINDA — Augie Cunningham and Caleb Fleener had two goals and one assist each for the Mustangs in the nonleague game Friday.

Goalie Ivan Shikhelman recorded 12 saves and four steals for Costa Mesa.

El Dorado tournament

PLACENTIA — Estancia lost to El Dorado and Simi Valley Royal to open the season on Friday.

Joseph Carillo and Jason Chesemore scored two goals each for the Eagles against El Dorado, which won, 17-5.

Kyle Fitzgerald scored two goals for Estancia (0-2) against Royal, which won 12-4.

Estancia goalie Eizik Leyva made four saves against El Dorado and three against Royal when he blocked a penalty shot.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Estancia 10, Segerstrom 8

Kinley Ohland swept in singles for the Eagles in the nonleague match Friday.

Meg Tuxford won two out of two in singles for Estacia (6-1).

Lightning Invitational

Four-time defending champion Newport Harbor and host Sage Hill remain undefeated after the first day of play at the Tennis Club.

The format is five singles and four doubles sets per match with St. Margaret’s and San Juan Hills the other two teams in the four-team event. Players can play singles and doubles in the best-of-nine match competition. Newport has not lost a set defeating San Juan Hills and St. Margaret’s 9-0, while Sage Hill defeated San Juan Hills 8-1.

A 2 p.m. start for the tournament Saturday because of ACT high school tests will have St. Margaret’s vs. San Juan Hills in doubles followed by Sage vs. St. Margaret’s in singles. The showdown between Newport Harbor and Sage Hill is set for 3 pm with singles followed by doubles between the two undefeated teams at 4 pm.

La Quinta 11, Costa Mesa 7

Kris Araracap won two singles sets 6-1, 7-6 for the Mustangs in the nonleague match Friday.

Christine Tfaye battled back from 1-5 down to win the last set of the day 7-5.

In doubles Megan Flaherty and Crystal Henriquez won two sets 7-5, 6-2 for Cost Mesa (3-2).
