Beach Volleyball: Ross, Gibb win titles

Costa Mesa residents April Ross and Jake Gibb continued their winning ways on the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals beach tour, as they claimed women’s and men’s titles, respectively at the Atlantic City tournament completed Sunday.

Ross and partner Kerri Walsh Jennings, the No. 1-seeded duo, defeated No. 2-seeded Emily Day and Summer Ross, 21-19, 21-12 in a 45-minute final to make it six wins in as many AVP tournaments this season.

Ross, a Newport Harbor High product, and Walsh Jennings are now 31-0 in AVP matches in 2014. They split $15,000 for their victory in New Jersey.

Top-seeded Gibb and partner Casey Patterson topped No. 3-seeded Ryan Doherty and Nick Lucena, 21-15, 21-14, in the 47-minute men’s final to claim their third straight AVP event.

Gibb and Patterson also split $15,000.

Newport Harbor High alumnus Ty Tramblie teamed with Andrei Belov to share fifth place and split $5,200 in the men’s event.

UC Irvine product Whitney Pavlik and partner Heather Hughes shared fifth in the women’s tournament, also splitting $5,200.

Costa Mesa resident Brad Keenan and partner John Mayer were ninth in the men’s event.

The AVP comes to Huntington Beach on Sept. 18 through 21.
